Wow! Thank you, Deanna… what a truly excellent program. I had never heard of it before but it’s already been playing in the background for the last hour.

A few points I’ve noticed after using it for the first time:

      1. *Right*-clicking on the station logo cycles through any available equalizer animations.

      2. When you’re recording songs, you lose the ability to right-click on a song to use ‘Search’. To get the ‘Search’ function back, click the large ‘Back’ button on bottom-right of the UI.

      3. Changing the recording format from OGG to MP3 is as easy as dropping a libmp3lame.dll file into the same folder as prp.exe then changing your recording preferences in Options.

      prp_lame_dll

      prp_mp3_options

      prp_mp3

The libmp3lame.dll needs to be either v3.99.5 or 3.100… and make sure it’s the x86-Win32 version. I chose v3.99.5 downloaded from the Lame3 libraries at Rarewares. (The v3.100 version is available from Free-Codecs.com but I found that site was less clear.)

      Hope this helps…

Aother great freebie is streamWriter, a program I’ve been using for years. It has all the features mentioned, e.g., recording, volume control, etc., but in addition allows building folders of your favourite stations (in my case, separate folders for blues, folk, soft rock, hard rock, country, and guitar along with unsorted stations for Christmas music, chill out, and a few classical composers). Finding stations is also easy, just enter the genre you want plus optional variables like kbps and a list appears in the right side panel.

Well, Deanna, you’ve hit another home run here. I’ll check out Pocket Radio, and I’m also interested in the StreamWriter that Wayne recommended. Thanks to both of you!

Depending on where one is listening, it may be worth mentioning that Alexa, the genius who lives inside my Amazon Echoes, can reproduce many of the tricks that Pocket Radio can do if you’re away from your PC. However, she wants you to provide the call letters or the frequency of the station you’re after, as she can’t show you her database. (I’d assume that her sisters, Siri and Google, can do the same thing.)

Anyone on Windows with Apple device can install iTunes which has a radio section (I listen for hours) with hundreds stations.
On a MacOS Catalina… radio can be found on Apple Music App.

For years I used to have iTunes for Windows and used it to listen to radio stations sorted out by content: NPR news and commentary on current affairs, Jazz, classical, country, etc. and to save music organized by tracks if it was an album. These days I have stations bookmarked, something messy, but I only listen to a few stations that cannot be reached with my own radio. Now I have a Mac (running Monterey), but iTunes is gone, gone, gone.

So, inspired by this article by Deanna in the current Newsletter, I now wonder what could be a good replacement of iTunes for Macs.

Ex-Windows user (Win. 98, XP, 7); since mid-2017 using also macOS. Presently on Monterey 12.15 & sometimes running also Linux (Mint).

MacBook Pro circa mid-2015, 15" display, with 16GB 1600 GHz DDR3 RAM, 1 TB SSD, a Haswell architecture Intel CPU with 4 Cores and 8 Threads model i7-4870HQ @ 2.50GHz.
Intel Iris Pro GPU with Built-in Bus, VRAM 1.5 GB, Display 2880 x 1800 Retina, 24-Bit color.
macOS Monterey; browsers: Waterfox "Current", Vivaldi and (now and then) Chrome; security apps. Intego AV

iTunes hasn’t gone. iTunes has been split in 3 : Music, Podcasts, and TV apps

Alex: “iTunes hasn’t gone. iTunes has been split in 3 : Music, Podcasts, and TV apps

If that’s all, then it has lost the radios?

But does it have the Milkdrop plugin that WinAmp has?? Nothing comes close.

That said it and streamWriter does sound interesting.
I am glad there is still some support for Shoutcast!

Quick question that I’ll bet others will ask. I downloaded the program as described in the article, but on a win 11 dell workstation laptop, Windows Defender won’t let it run, with no option to run it anyway. I turned Defender off and still no dice. Could you ask the author re this and maybe publish a response? This program would be very useful for me.

      • #2454280

What error do you get that prevents you running the software?

If you turned Defender off how was it able to prevent the software running?

        cheers, Paul

I have mostly migrated to On-Line Radio Box. It is native to your World-Wide Web browser. The station that I have truly flipped out for is Swoothradio. It reminds me very much of (when I had satellite TV here) Sirius Disorder.

Where can I find the article “Pocket Radio Player — a world of radio stations” online so that I can share a link to the content?  There is no link to the plus Newsletter (19.24.0, 2022-06-13)  “Plus Newsletter” is not valid.

I am interested in linking to the article content which provides instructions and recommendations for using the Pocket Radio Player.

The full article is only for Plus members and can’t be linked.

You can become a PLUS member for as much as $1…

    • #2482767

I understand.  I am a plus member.  If I decide to write about a topic and find content only available to AskWoody Plus members, I provide the link to the plus content and explain that you have to be a plus member of AskWoody to read it.  This provides credit to the author and perhaps some motivation for readers to become paid (i.e., Plus) members of AskWoody.com.

Some of the Plus member Newsletters are linked in the 2022 Archives.  Since the 19.24.0 (i.e., Plus) Newsletter containing the full article written by Deanna McElveen is not linked, the citation for content is “AskWoody Plus – 19.24.0 – 2022-06-13 – Pocket Radio Player — a world of radio stations”  This citation would be for content that I cannot access as an AskWoody.com Plus member.

That Plus newsletter is listed and the link is valid if you’re logged in as a Plus member, but you are not being recognized as a Plus member (compare the first line under your name beside each of your posts with the similar line under Alex5723 on his posts).

          I paid $20 on August 24th, 2022 (Receipt #1820-4759, AskWoody – Order 2472441 ).  My Plus membership apparently vanished.  I’ll contact sb@askwoody.com.

Have you logged-in with user and password ?

    • #2483618

      Yes.

Most of the Plus content is not linked.  I would attach the page to show you but there does not appear to be a means to attach a screen capture.  The top right of the page after I log in says:

The issue appears to be that you cancelled the subscription in the console.  This messes with the plus membership big time.  I’m fixing it now but just a fyi if you want to adjust subscriptions, email me ahead of time as there are settings I have to fix up.

‘you’ do not show me any plus content.

When I go to your site, I am offered the chance to log out, which seems to me that I am logged in which should mean you know who I am and my Plus status, but it doesn’t.

‘My ACCOUNT’ SHOWS i MA PLUS.

I have switched to new computer w W11 instead of W10.  Probably this new computer or OS is why. What do I do now?
