• POP3 e-mail on Vista and Outlook 2010

I have a BellSouth POP3 e-mail account the is on my 2010 Outlook running on a Vista machine.  In the middle of January, after it had been working, I started getting time-out errors when trying to access the BellSouth e-mail server.

I have not been able to remedy the situation, either on the Vista machine or on any of my W10 machines.  The machine is successfully running a Verizon.net account.

    Help.

It’s possible that BellSouth changed the port settings for incoming and outgoing email. Email providers usually give advance warning of this kind of change; look for an earlier email from them announcing this change. It may be in your spam folder.

Can you access your BellSouth email online via a browser? If so, then look there too, as the online version of your email (webmail) may have its own spam or junk filter that intercepted  the announcement so that you never got to hear of the change.

I know that Verizon/AOL has made this change at least once in recent years, as a way to combat the flood of spam reaching their customers. BellSouth may well have done the same thing.

The problem probably isn’t with Vista or with Outlook 2010: I’m still getting email via Verizon on my Vista machine using Outlook 2007.

Use OAuth or secure mail key for email apps

We’re enhancing the security of AT&T Mail. Soon you’ll have to use either OAuth or a secure mail key to get your email through an app.

I am now attempting to access the account from Windows Mail on my Windows 10 machine.

It has been so long ago that I set up and entered a password for the account I have no current idea what that password is.  How can I access the account?

You might want to try the “mailpassview” utility found at:

      http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mailpv.html

It says it can find passwords for Outlook 2010.

When downloading this, you will probably have to turn off any A/V or malware scanner, as this utility will usually set them off as “malware” (and it IS NOT).

Your A/V scanner/malware scanner should also be OFF when you run the utility, as it will immediately try to kill it and remove it.

I have to use this a lot for clients when I have to set up a new email app on a new system, and like you, they have no idea of what their email password is…they keep asking me what it is, LOL.

I whip out the NirSoft utility and when it finds their email password…they usually say, “Oh…that looks familiar”.

When you are done and turn your A/V/malware scanner back on, be sure to allow the NirSoft utility when it is found by either/both of your scanners, as when they find it, they will all pretty much quarantine it, then you can tell it (I hope…) to allow it to stay on your system.

      Good luck discovering your password.

You might try nirsoft’s password recovery tools such as https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/web_browser_password.html  if you have it saved in your browser. Once you get it then you can log in and go through the setup for OAuth

And put the password in your password manager!

      cheers, Paul

Whatever the password it that is on my computer doesn’t match whatever password AT&T holds for the account.  How can I get a password reset from AT&T

Well – I was able to get the password for my BellSouth account reset and was able to access it through Web mail.

Using the password that activates access to the account on the web, however does not access the account either through my Outlook 2010 set up on my Vista machine nor does it work on my Windows 10 machine using its Mail application.

I use my.yahoo as the home page on my machines.

If I am signed in to my Yahoo mail account – I get my.yahoo

If I am signed in to my Bellsouth mail account – I get the Currently AT&T my.yahoo

      To me – THIS SUCKS.

Just had to go through this for a couple clients. You need to generate a secure key here https://www.att.com/support/article/email-support/KM1240308

Then replace your password in Outlook with the generated key. You need a separate key for each device you use (phone, laptop, desktop etc.).

      Never Say Never

Gave up trying to access my BellSouth email account through Outlook on my Vista machine.

I can access it through Yahoo on my Windows 10 Desk top.

A new year and a new issue.

On my Vista machine that is running my POP3 e-mail account for Verizon.net and has been up until yesterday evening (01/18/22) when I started getting the pop up of the Internet Server requesting me to resubmit my user name and password for the account.  I have not changed either for years.  I submit the populated request and the screen goes away – sometime later it pops up again.  I have not received any e-mail on this account since this started.

        This is not (necessarily) unusual.

My wife uses Outlook 2016 on a Windows 10 PC for her Verizon POP3 email, and she sometimes experiences the same thing you just described. It also used to happen to me when I had Outlook 2007 on my Vista PC for Verizon email. I suspect that this is a problem at Verizon/AOL’s end and not anything that you or I can fix ourselves.

However, if the problem persists, please let us know. In our case, the issue eventually goes away after a while (minutes/hours).

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Guess I have found the answer to my situation –

Verizon has departed the e-mail business

      https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/email

Which really ends up meaning – I have no need to keep or use my Vista machine.

That change happened a couple of years ago. Your verizon.net address is still good; what’s different is that this email is now handled by AOL instead of by Verizon itself.

With this change I cannot access the adderess through Outlook and POP3.

I accessed it through AOL.  Cumbersome but it worked.
