Apple to release first ARM Mac without Intel processor in next 18 months, predicts Kuo

Kuo is predicting that one of Apple’s new products to be released within the next 12-18 months will be a Mac with an in-house processor, instead of using an Intel CPU.

Thanks, Alex5723. From the article connected with that link:

Since the coronavirus outbreak, Kuo highlights that Apple has been “more aggressive” with its funding for research, development, and production of 5nm process chips that are expected to show up in the first Macs with ARM CPUs.

        Excuse me?

Also: what exactly are the pros and the cons here? Changing hardware architecture means a lot of applications software designed to make the most of the old hardware may no longer run, or run sufficiently well on the new, so will have to be patched up or replaced with new ones, leading in many cases to periods without things that are needed by some and even many users to carry on doing whatever they need their new (pressumably) faster ARM machines for.

Always according to the same article, the schedule for letting the developers know the necessary details for them to start transitioning their applications from the old to the new situation seems to be curiously left to almost the last moment.

Apple has done this in the past, twice. Motorola 68000 > PowerPC & PowerPC > intel with (almost) no ill effects.
Microsoft managed to run Windows 10 on ARM…

        Since the coronavirus outbreak”

That has to be the most bizarre attempt to slot current news into your article. An attempt to boost the SEO / hits?

        cheers, Paul
