After the recent July updates, I discovered that the printer ( a Brother) would not print in Windows 8.1. I am not sure if this could have been caused by some intermittent power failures recently.  Nothing worked at the computer using Brother software.  So it meant a trip to the printer and WiFi room.  Everything seemed to be otherwise normal.  The printer informed me that it was in a “deep sleep”.  I pressed the power button to kill the power to the printer, waited a few seconds, then turned on the power.  The printer reset, and printing went back to normal.

Not a big deal, except for the inconvenience of having to physically interact with the printer.

Surely the printer has a web interface that you can use to connect? Unless the printer was asleep for a few days and your DHCP server re-assigned the IP address.

        cheers, Paul

If there is an interface, I don’t know it.  As to the second issue, the printer was not used for days, so that could have been the problem, as well as the brief power interruptions that I mentioned.  Resetting the printer almost always works – except for my former Samsung printer which just died – probably from a power surge. (I now have surge protection.)

I have a Lexmark BW Laser and keep finding the browser wants to print to the manual tray, not tray 1. Of course, since the browser is not opened with admin privileges, can’t make any needed changes.  Plus if you open the browser with Admin Privileges the printer won’t be there.  It has not been better since W10 decided to provide printers to individual accounts and not the PC in general.

Will try this weekend to disable Windows from ‘updating drivers’ or ‘finding printers’, install the Lexmark drivers, in the hopes that will clear the problem.

It seems the Lemark driver printer object behaves better than Windows automatically created  printer object.
