Has anyone used a privacy proxy to help manage your online personal information that is being held and sold by data brokers?

    If so, were they effective?

There are a number of such organizations/apps including:

    • Surfshark’s Incogni
    • Abine DeleteMe
    • IDX Complete
    • Avast BreachGuard
    • The Kanary
    • Abine Blur Premium
    • Avast AntiTrack
    • Ghostery Privacy Suite
    • Norton AntiTrack

As you can imagine I’ve been contacted by some of these “delete me” services.

In the majority of the cases all I had ahead of time was the person’s email address when they signed up as a mere registered user to post on the site. (None of these folks were former plus members). Because the site responds back when you sign up with a “Hi, thank you for….” the site’s email address was in their mailbox.

I then got contacted by the “remove me from your database” broker with their NAME, their email address and exactly when that email got sent to them.

Prior to their email I had no idea who this person was, no information in the site as to their name.  I NOW have their name and other pertinent info and can clearly tell this brokerage service has gone through their entire ancient email storage and harvested how many other umpteen information.  In some cases I didn’t have their email address as they had unsubscribed years ago.  One email I got had the notice that “you sent me an email in 2016″…. I didn’t have their email anywhere on the site.

As you can tell I think these services are not useful and only end up bringing MORE attention to the person’s information, not less.

      Susan

Thanks for sharing your experience with privacy proxies.

After submitting the topic, I noticed that the heading should be Privacy Proxies and the Removal of Personal Information not Privacy Proxies and the Remove of Personal Information.

I was unable to edit the heading once I hit the submit button and would appreciate it if you can work your magic on the heading.

      Thanks
