    Hi there

I’ve just hidden the May updates via wushowhide but noticed that they are still showing in Windows Update as available.

Within wushowhide they are sitting in “show hidden updates” and not in “updates available to hide”.
I’m wondering why they are not available in wushowhide yet are in Windows Update?

When running wushowhide it took quite some time in “detecting problems” mode. Is that normal?

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

      1. Refer to: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000013-how-to-clear-the-windows-update-queue-in-win10/

Its very lengthy but in a nutshell you will need to clear the items in Windows Update otherwise they will download and install.

Try following my method here which is based on PKCano’s initial post at the start.

Consider using another 3rd party updating tool like WuMgr which is my go-to now.
      A lot easier IMO.

      Cheers

The reason the updates are still showing in Windows update is because they were detected “before” you hid them and Windows remembers that until it does a new “detect updates” scan.

And there’s no need to go through such a complicated process to clear the pending updates history.

Simply select the “Pause updates for 7 days” option and then use the registry trick I discovered to “unpause” updates without having to press the Resume updates button.

See my How to unpause Windows updates “without” using the Resume updates button. topic for instructions.

This procedure clears all pending updates (without them getting downloaded and installed) and takes effect immediately without even needing to restart Windows.

Actually, that Pause/Resume procedure was discovered by @Matador back in August, 2020. See #2286979. That is the procedure being referred to in the above post. AKB2000013 was written in Nov. 2018, long before other methods were developed.
Your procedure was written in 2022.
        Credit where credit is due.

Understood, but @Matador’s procedure isn’t even close to as simply as the registry hack I figured out.

His requires the user perform numerous different steps, including disabling and re-enabling services and restarting their PC.

Mine simply changes a few values in the registry to “unpause” Windows updates (using a simple batch file, powershell script or reg file) without the user needing to change anything else or restart their PC for it to immediately take effect.

No, @Matador ‘s procedure was to Pause and then Resume, which caused WU to refresh the queue after wushowhide hiding updates. (Again, see the linked post #2286979 from above.) It has been the recommended procedure since 2020. See #2295588 from Sept 2020 and #2303099 from Oct 2020.

            My procedure
was what took many steps. It was written before further experimentation had been done with the problem.

I just used wushowhide to hide an update that was waiting for installation within Windows Update. I have my computer (10 Pro) set to notify me but not to download anything within Windows Update (the “famous” setting of 2 within GPEdit). Because of this, I noticed that KB4023057 was “waiting in the wings” to be downloaded and installed by WU.

Upon seeing that, I exited the WU application and did the following:

      1. Launch wushowhide and selected the option to “Hide updates” once the two options of “Hide updates” and “Show hidden updates” appeared.
      2. Selected KB4023057 as an update I wanted to hide and clicked “Next”, letting wushowhide do its thing. when it was done, I selected the “Close troubleshooter” option.
      3. Relaunched wushowhide, this time selecting the option to “Show hidden updates” in order to verify the fact that KB4023057 was in fact hidden. Once I saw that the KB was on the list of hidden updates, I selected the “Cancel”button to exit wushowhide.
      4. I then proceeded to launch WU and, once launched, I clicked the option to “Pause updates for 7 days”. I then counted to 30 after which time I then clicked the button to “Resume updates”, at which time WU proceeded to check for updates that might be available. Since KB4023057 was now hidden, it didn’t find anything to install, so it came back saying that I was fully up to date. At this time, I exited Windows Update.

NOTE: Doing the above procedure, which is, I guess, a variation of sorts of @Matador ‘s method referred to above by @PKCano and @Matador , I have never had any update listed as “Optional” by WU get installed. I have had this procedure fully work only if ALL non-optional updates have been hidden by wushowhide. Otherwise, any non-optional updates that you haven’t hidden will be installed after clicking the “Resume updates” button.

That’s why you go back in wushowhide and check that only the updates you want are showing after you have hidden the updates!!! 🙂

          That’s exactly why I performed step 3 above!  😉
