• Quick Q about 21H1 upgrade

I am getting ready to install 21H1 on my 20H2 laptop, and had a quick question. In April, I upgraded to 20H2 using Susan’s You Tube tutorial, and still have the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant app on my desktop. Should I download that again in preparation for 21H1, or can I use that one and continue with Susan’s tutorial from that step?

Also – I know there was a discussion about that tutorial here several months back that I had referred to – would anyone know the link to that? I thought I had it, but can’t seem to locate it. Susan gave instructions there, I believe, and others also added information on the process.

    Thanks!

The actual program itself (Windows10Upgrade9252.exe) hasn’t changed since at least 2018 and you can reuse it as many times as you want.

If you’re already on the most current version of Win10, it’ll display Thank you for updating to the latest version of Windows 10.

If a newer version is available, it’ll display Update to the latest version of Windows 10 with an option to Update Now.

Great! Thanks so much! I can see 21H1 in the wushowhide queue – not hidden – so I hope to do the upgrade myself in the next few days rather than let WU handle it. 20H2 went fien when I used Susan’s tutorial, so hopefully this will too!

        Thanks again!

FYI – I did try the Windows Upgrade Assistant that I already had and it said “Thank you for updating to the latest version of Windows 10.” So I did download the newest version and then it said “Update to the latest version of Windows 10 with an option to Update Now.”

That allowed the update to start – but I had to did cancel it as my internet has been wonky and very slow due to the hurricane, and only connects at 3G – so I’ll try again another time.

You are running Internet with your PC connected to an smartphone ‘hot spot’ or PC with SIM card ?

It’s a Franklin 910 mobile hotspot device – internet only. Not a phone. Seems there is some tower issue with Sprint – though I am thinking it has something to do with T-Mobile’s takeover. I always get a good 4G signal here with that device (no other internet options except satellite), but in the past few days, it has goes from 3G to disconnecting – never 4G. Very frustrating. i spent an hour with tech support this morning – reset everything, and finally they determined it was “a tower issue” – so we’ll see.

But so slow, that I can’t really try that upgrade till things are back to normal – whenever that is!

OK – so I restarted my process for getting 21H2**(Correction – 21H1)** after my internet connection recovered (long story), and am now in the middle of downloading that update. I used Susan’s You Tube method and it all started out fine – went through the checking and started downloading. It has been about two HOURS now and it has crawled to about 90% downloaded – it does change the percentage, but very slowly.

ETA: It now says UPDATING 92% – does that mean installing, or downloading?

My question – what will happen if it doesn’t finally complete the download but just stays stalled at about that much? Can I restart the laptop, and if I do try again, will it start all over, or will it pick up from where it left off?

At this point, it is still downloading, but is this very slow process normal?

Hopefully it will complete, but I wanted to be ready in case it doesn’t and I need to attempt to restart the process or the laptop.

Or roll back to the backup I just made before I started this process?

      Thanks!

      21H2 hasn’t been released yet.
Depending of your current version 2004 to 2009 to 21H1 is about 100 MB+ in size and should take no more than 2-5 minutes to download. It a Enablement Package that sets some switches ON.

Yep – my mistake. These numbers make me crazy! I’m in the process of getting 21H1 – the May update with the Windows Updater.

Right now I have 20H2, and thought that this was going to be a quick update to 21H1 before 21H2 comes out. It hasn’t been, as I described. What would be taking it so long?

So should I just continue to let it keep working?

      Patience, grasshopper!

      😉

So, here’s my story! After nearly 6 hours, and only getting to 97%, I finally ran out of patience and just restarted the laptop – twice. All came back fine, but when I checked winver the first time, it was still on 20H2 – so all of that downloading – turns out to have been about 7 GB worth, from the Windows 10 Update Assistant site – didn’t do anything. And not at all confident that if it actually has finished, it would have installed anyway.

I then checked WuMgr and there the update to 21H1 was, so I figured I’d try to see what happened if I downloaded it from there. Well, in about 30 seconds it found the update and I downloaded and installed it very quickly – no more than a minute or so all told.

I restarted again, and now I am on V21H1 Build 19043.1237. Simple – and after the whole afternoon waiting to get to the end of the download, I wonder if any of it actually was used by WuMgr when it flew through its update process.

So, seems all’s well at the moment – but what was that all about, I wonder? I don’t see any adverse reactions and all seems to be running smoothly! But I can’t tell you how much I HATE Windows updating. So glad not to have to do it on my old Win 7 – 0Patch is doing its job there well enough.

Thanks for your input – hopefully that won’t ever happen again!
