This is the way Previews are supposed to work — the early volunteers get clobbered. The other half of the equation implies that Microsoft fixes the Preview before it becomes a Postview.

      Good luck on that !!

April 10, 2018 is Patch Tuesday and coming up real soon now. Is there a DEFCON-3 in sight for March patches?

There are still issues with Jan-Mar patches that need to be resolved by Microsoft. Hopefully the WinClient OS fairs better this month.

You mean you want to install them?

The backlog of patches is huge. So now we need the a-ok for 1st quarter patches. Let’s hope it doesn’t become semi-annual. Hello Microsoft… are you listening!?

      Cheers!!

Since the OS division at Microsoft has been scuttled by the reorg, I wonder if the guys who are left will be able to handle the workload. The problems are piling up months at a time. The entire 3 months of 2018 for W7 is not what Microsoft expected extended support to look like. The workload must be ten fold for the engineers assigned to dealing with these issues. I do not think that the preview program has been given much credence or maybe attention by Microsoft in the past otherwise we would no be experiencing all this turmoil today.

      Thanks Woody.

Honest question–why on earth would one install Preview updates on a production Server?

I used to manage close to a dozen servers at a non-profit org, although we’re using cloud-y SaaS stuff now (a directive from top brass). Anyway, when I was managing those systems, Previews never touched the live/production systems, only the experimental/testing stuff. Patches were rolled out only after a thorough testing and vetting approach. We caught buggy patches in the experimental systems that saved our bacon.

If one doesn’t have a dedicated box for testing patches, at least throw up a VM. It’s better than nothing.

Anyway, the onus is on Microsoft to resolve the problem. These days, I trust them as much as I trust a thief to leave one’s house just the way he found it.

It seems that Google security researchers are finding most of Microsoft’s critical vulnerabilities these days.

      Microsoft is outsourcing that too?

That’s exactly why nobody with common sense should check for Windows updates manually on Windows 10! As long as automatic update (if not disabled) is left alone, previews (patches shipped after Patch Tuesday) won’t get installed. Of course, Microsoft does not label them preview on Windows 10. Really sneaky…
