Is there any way to do a search and replace across all the slides in a presentation where the object is to change the format of the text (say, to change all occurences of a word from normal to italic)?

As best I can determine, there is not. That capability does exist in word, but Powerpoint is more limited in that area. With 2002, it may be possible to create a VBA routine to do it, but it would probably take far longer than simply going through the presentation.
