Hi, my windows 7 machine is excellent, running a quad core AMD 9850 chip on an Asus EM378 Pro motherboard using the onboard graphics and the 32 bit version of windows. The machine is fast and stable. However, occasionally when I leave the machine for a few hours, I come back and the monitor is a bright sky blue and the machine does not want to recover. I hard reboot, tell it to just boot to windows and it all comes back. I have tried to reload all the drivers and that did not seem to help. Does anyone have any ideas?

      Welcome to the Lounge!!

What are you power saving options?

Are your keyboard & mouse USB or wireless?

      Joe,
I am using a USB keyboard with the USB mouse plugged into a USB port on the keyboard. I will need to check on exactly which power saving options I enabled and get back to you. I did have an obscure message a while back that the device plugged into a USB port should be plugged into a USB 2.0 port to function faster, but I didn’t think my motherboard had any slow USB ports.

I actually get a similar problem I believe. The only difference in my case is I get a black screen instead, but I believe that’s because I’m using a laptop (are you using a separate monitor for your PC?). So far I don’t really know how to solve it, but it only happens if I don’t put it in sleep mode or close the lid(which is turning of the display, not sleep mode). I had the same problem on another laptop, and I thought it was just the display wasn’t on, but after I got this one I’m sure it has something to do with Windows itself (my current laptop has a button for turning on the display, it’s non-responsive too).

I would recommend that you simply don’t leave you computer on idle for long, or when you aren’t going to be around. That’s what I’m doing right now, until I find a fix or Microsoft decides to patch it.

Have you checked the power saving options? Often they are set to put a machine to sleep or hibernate after a relatively short period of time.

Have you checked for a BIOS update?

        Are your drivers up-to-date?

Well, the problem is that I’m almost certain that the computer isn’t in sleep mode or hibernate mode. This is because it is completely unresponsive, the power button, keyboard or the mouse don’t seem to have much of an effect. Normally I just press the power button to wake it up or if it’s sleep mode, any button should work. Regardless of that, I have checked the power options, but I had set them such that the computer wouldn’t do anything but dim the display and then turn off the screen after like fifteen and thirty minutes of inactivity respectively.

I’m not sure how to check for BIOS updates or if my drivers are up to date, however. I can only assume that they are, since the problem started as soon as I started using the computer and it was purchased less than a few months ago.

So what does the computer manufacturer say?

It is not unusual for computers to be shipped with buggy or out of date drivers – or in need of a BIOS update.

Check the manufacturer’s website and look for available downloads.

        Hope This Helps

I found this and applied last night. I don’t know yet if this fixed my issue as my machine would follow this scenario every 4 or 5 days, Blank (Black) screen when trying to come out of Monitor power down mode. When I try to wake the system by moving the mouse/keyboard my monitor syncs up, (based on Monitor Display LED indicators) and there is occasional disk activity. One thing that I have not tried when this occurs is this: Press Windows/Start Key –> Right Arrow Key–> Right Arrow Key–> R Key –>Enter. This should reset your machine.
