      a) rats, I already went to Win 10 22H2. (I did hide the update to win 11 22H2)

      b) is this (“In Control”) better than WuMgr, or simply different?

It’s okay,  Windows 10 22H2 is a minor update.  I’ll be giving it a thumbs up soon.  I’m just always cautious.  Incontrol ONLY controls feature releases.  Nothing else.

      Different.
In Control sets the Windows version you want to stay with. WUmgr install/block updates/upgrades.

      Susan,

Suggest you make your original post (in Ask Woody) a “sticky” in the Windows 10 Forum.

So did the whole plan of naming these yearly updates after the year just fall through? In other words, we’re sticking with 22H2 and not 2022, even though there is no 22H1?

We don’t set update naming conventions. However, the recommended updates have been provided here.

I’m aware this site doesn’t set the naming conventions. It’s Microsoft’s software, so obviously they will set their own version numbers.

However, for a brief period, the system seemed to have changed. There were reports that the version numbering system was going to switch to just be the year. e.g. 2022 instead of 22H2. There were several  posts on this forum that used the new naming scheme.

But now it seems to have gone back. And I’m asking for more information about that.

Do I need to erase and redo the Rescue Bootable Drive USB with Reflect in it made in Macrium Reflect 7 Free Version back when I was upgrading my Desktop from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro OR can I use the same Rescue Bootable Drive USB ? If no, can I reuse the same USB and how?

I am currently on 21H2 Build 19044.1586 and about to do some Windows Updates.

      • #2495900

Reuse the USB bootable rescue drive. Use Macrium on your Win10 machine to remake the Rescue drive and it will automatically do whatever is necessary to format and install the software. Be sure to verify that you can boot from it when you are through.

        • #2495904

Ok. But should I update my Macrium version of 7.3.5925 (Oct. 2021) to version 7.3.6391 (NOV. 2021) since it fixes a Rescue Media that some have reported incorrect drive letter assignments in Windows PE and it has been fixed. In Red Text it says if this issue affects you please create a fresh rescue media after updating.

I only have used Macrium 3 times is installing it in Oct. 2021. So I don’t know if now I will have this Rescue Media issue. Should I just update Macrium just in case and so I don’t need to create a new Rescue Drive USB for Win 10 for a 2nd time ??

          • #2495916

The latest version of Macrium Reflect Free is v8.0.7097 which is what I’ve just updated to. Re-create the Macrium USB rescue media on this version, and then you can create a fresh full image of your drive whenever you please – with the fully up to date version of the software installed on both your USB drive and PC itself.

            • #2495918

That’s weird a Free version 8, my Macrium Reflect 7  opens up with only version 7.3.6391 as option. Soo.. How do I Update/turn my version 7 to version 8 ? Is there a big difference for version 7 ?

I looked at Macrium’s website and I think what it says under Home Version 8 hasn’t changed since last year when I installed version 7.

Is clicking on ‘Build’ to update another option to re-create the Macrium USB Rescue Media ??

              Soo.. How do I Update/turn my version 7 to version 8 ?

If you look in the menu, there is a “Check for updates” option (like most software has in the menu).

    • #2495996

Do I need to erase and redo the Rescue Bootable Drive USB

Nope. If it still boots the machine and allows you to restore then you can take the “do nothing” option.

      cheers, Paul

My registry is currently set to 21H2.  Does InControl override whatever settings I have in my registry that I set using registry keys/group policy discussed on AskWoody or do I have keep updating my registry manually to 22H2 when it is recommended?

I would advise to either manually adjust your registry OR use InControl. Not both.

I would tell InControl to [Release Control] when Susan gives the all clear for 22H2 features (= non-security updates).

P.S. Remember that InControl does NOT reject security updates, only feature updates.

P.S. 2 I may be wrong, but if I am, others will clobber me and you’ll know.

So do I need to reset my registry settings back to

      “TargetReleaseVersionInfo”=-

        Yes.
Reset the Registry keys if you are using InControl.
        OR
Don’t use InControl, then you have to manually reset the Registry keys every time you want to change Product and or version.

        Don’t use both methods

Just want to be sure. InControl says it sets like 6 registry keys. What if one of them is

          [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpd

and I use the key Susan provided to reset the values and blank out the version. Might that change the InControl setting I just applied?

I used Susan’s reg key to to reset the values – and blank out the version. What I got does not look like her example.

          Susan’s example:

          Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

          [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]

          “TargetReleaseVersion”=-

          “TargetReleaseVersionInfo”=-

          What I got:

I just ran InControl. It flashed red and said I was only partially protected and needed to change two keys.  I clicked to get control and it set the keys back to what they were using Susan’s reg key for holding at Windows10 22H2.

Looks like if you clear the keys, InControl puts the settings right back.

InControl uses three of the Registry settings that Susan’s script uses. That’s why you don’t need both the script and InControl.

But InControl also uses additional Registry settings that are not in Susan’s script.

I misunderstood that using both would cause problems not that it was just unnecessary.
