AskWoody_MVPDid anyone of you run Adware Cleaner, now from Malwarebytes, “adwcleaner.exe” after the latest two microsoft “updates”, finally resulting in W10Home.1803 Build 17134.191 ?
Did you run Adwcleaner immediately prior to installing the latest two Microsoft updates?
What you are seeing may not be a result of Microsoft updates.

AskWoody Lounger@fred AdwCleaner v7.2.2 seems to have a bug, regarding the SpywareBlaster protected list. If you are running SpywareBlaster, do this: disable all SpywareBlaster protections. Then rerun AdwCleaner.
You should get a much cleaner result. Then enable the protections. Your list looks much similar to what I got on a W7 machine. So, I don’t think the OS comes into play. See my thread over at MGs from about a week ago https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/buggy-adwcleaner-7-2-2.319021/#post-20176471 user thanked author for this post.

AskWoody LoungerThis month is indeed a mess, and this is going to snowball from here since the quality updates are all cumulative. This may be the final nail in the coffin of MS as a viable patch entity/provider.

AskWoody MVPI just had a terrible thought… what if the actual people writing the code for these updates are as confused as the people responsible for integrity and continuity between the KB articles, Update Catalog, and actual installation files on the Microsoft website! Or were those people downsized, and no one has actual responsibility?
Come on Microsoft! This is what people are seeing/experiencing when using your products… you should be paying as much attention to this, as to how good your advertising looks! I checked out the ads… they flow, they have style, they make your products look good… and then actual customers have to wade through a mess of conflicting information to apply patches that have a good chance of messing something up on their machines? User experience should reinforce that they made a good decision purchasing your product… or those advertising claims will simply be quickly dismissed… as in- oh, that’s Microsoft… they used to be a good company, but its been too messed up in 2018 to consider buying anything else from them!

AskWoody Lounger@Elly I think that “Terrible thought” is dawning on most of us, if not all just lately. The only shining light seems to be Win8.1 never a problem one Month to the next. Could it be they have forgotten about it? Arguably the best of the bunch. Cant ever remember having a problem with it except years ago with KB3000850 and that’s about it.

GuestNobody but now extinct Sun Microsystems needed Java, only Microsoft needed .NET; Marketing played a part in getting those technologies out into the developers computers. It was the slick selling point of code once – run anywhere that helped move product, also because it was mostly true. Sure there were problems but those fixed and the application would work.
You are right about the ads being for hollow some or many more folks, marketing is easy just like pushing an off button.

GuestAccording to https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-us/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2018-8308:
The Windows Update classification for the following update packages has been changed from Optional to Recommended: 4338821, 4338816, 4338831. These packages will be installed automatically if the operating system is configured to receive automatic updates.
4338821, 4338816, 4338831 are the Previews of Monthly Rollups for Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8.1 / Server 2012 R2.
As far as I can remember, I think this is the first time Previews of Monthly Rollups are changed from Optional to Recommended.
Since only the server preview rollups are updated in the catalog, I think Microsoft is not telling us the whole truth. Probably only the server preview rollups will be installed automatically if the operating system is configured to receive automatic updates AND the option to receive recommended updates is set in the Windows Update client settings.

AskWoody_MVPC’mon, are you really going to bash timezone differences in dates between articles and catalog? 🙂
the list of fixes in Win10 cumulative upates are worthy
.NET issue is not close to be serious, just a side affect of security protection (d**n you spectre)
it doesn’t affect most users 😀but that does not forgive the absence of steady schedule for updates release and the mass date-revision in catalog withou clear explanation

ManagerI could understand timezone differences, if all of the patches were off by a consistent +1 or -1. But these are all over the map — and the four-day gap between KB and Update dates is troubling because MS has changed so much, so quickly.
I’m still trying to figure out what the .NET changes mean…. Suggestions?

AskWoody_MVPIsn’t that change is to “suspend” the distribution of .NET patches though Auto WU?
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/2018/07/20/advisory-on-july-2018-net-framework-updates/about the dates, it’s just sloppy work
we had seen various updates (specially Adobe Flash) that have dates earlier than release date1 user thanked author for this post.

AskWoody LoungerThe patches that I’m able to pull down with WU (s&q rollup and msrt) are still dated July 10th except for the preview rollup for next month which is dated the 18th. (I haven’t installed anything, I just wanted to hide all the.net things for the time being.) Shouldn’t the dates on the patches received through windows update have changed as well?

GuestI suspected that the patches/documentation for Windows would deteriorate further after the Windows Division was reorganized and splintered when Myerson left. Although I obviously cannot prove it, it feels like we are looking at the future of patch qaulity, an ever lasting glide path to poorer quality than we have already experienced.

GuestIf you go to the KB articled for KB4338817, it correctly shows the latest build for 1709 (16299.579), but if you click on the slider on the left for any previous build for 1709, the latest build disappears and 16299.551 becomes the latest build listed.

GuestI truly enjoy this AskWoody website. Woody, your Computerworld articles are also great! What with, rabbit holes, coughing, confusing surprises, and cluster bombs, all these make for an interesting 3 card Monty. Only one question, is this the best ever month for Microsoft Windows Updates? … or, are there more surprises to follow? I dream of a full Green Defcon 5.

GuestIt’s notepad.exe only… They’ve made it work with *nix newlines after being ~25 years overdue. Huge revolution in the Windows land, best improvement since sliced bread… 😛
On a more serious note – if implemented as described and it’s really inserting non-existent \r (0x0D, CR) chars into the file instead of just displaying the file properly, it’s gonna be exactly as unusable as before for actually editing the files. Noone wants those converted without asking.

AskWoody PlusAs a Win 7 x64 Group A non-techie user, I think that the July situation is shaping up as even worse than the March 2018 patches. In the end I skipped the March updates as too risky and July looks to be more of the same.
What with sloppy documentation and patches that cause more problems than they solve, I wonder about Microsoft; has all their quality control disappeared, along with the staff, or does Microsoft not even care now?
If Microsoft thinks this is the way to persuade me to migrate from Win 7 to Win 10 (of whatever flavour), they’re wrong. I’ll stick with Win 7 for the near future, but Chromebooks or Apple are starting to look more attractive day by day (or patch Tuesday by patch Tuesday!)

GuestJust to put things in perspective my Company had issues with 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 screwing up a lot of automation services, web services, and sql/oracle databases. Services erroring, unable to kill processes (much like back in the 2000/2003 days when it lost all its handles and just a rogue processes id you can’t kill without a reboot (not even with pskill/pskill64/processexplorer) is sitting there.
This was partially/mostly fixed by installing:
July 12, Security Update – patch KB4345459 on 2008 R2
July 12, Security Update – patch KB4345424 on 2012 R2.I do think these problems were introduced by the botched July 10th update,
We are not out of the woods yet though as the .NET updates are almost certainly going to be messing something up elsewhere and I may be in a situation where these are also impacting the same programs reliant on the same services as the security patch broke.
Let me just say that the problems in the security update from 10th July were much more severe and wideranging than the patch detail of the fixes they handed out.
I would appreciate more honesty from Microsoft and for someone knowledgable to take over and sort out their patch regimen, the consistency of the past has just disappeared.

See my thread over at MGs from about a week ago https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/buggy-adwcleaner-7-2-2.319021/#post-2017647
@woody @geekdom
@struldbrug THANKS, ! It appears you are right!, I use “spybot” to immunize passively browser-settings;
so after reapplying these Spybot-settings “AdwareCleaner 7.2.2” came up with the same list…..Now I feel so sorry to have falsely accused Microsoft of being sloppy, and bringing out fake-news to you all;
and I do hope future updates and upgrades will be at the users wishes 😀 .Regards fred

AskWoody LoungerStarting about August 24, my adwcleaner v. 7.2.2 started detecting a legacy PUP every time it ran. About August 28, I contacted malwarebytes’ support, and they are considering the possibility of malware or a PUP. I’ve followed their suggestions twice. When I hear more from support, I’ll post the final message from malwarebytes’ support.
In the past, I’ve run malwarebyetes’ with MSE and had good luck. For the past year, I’ve run malwarebytes with AVAST free and also had good luck. If you still have a subscription to Windows Secrets, you can find out more in their forums concerning what malwarebytes’ plays well with.
