I just finished watching the Surface presentation. Most of it was ho-hum, well anticipated (thanks, Evan!), and kind of repetitive. But then the prese

Typo – second sentence of second paragraph should begin “Along with Surface Neo” not Duo

Microsoft is turning into a joke with a foldable smartphone running ANDROID. What about Windows 10X ?
I suspect in 2 years the new Surface tablets/laptops will run Chrome OS.

What would be cool IMO is if they called them Neo and Trinity and have limited editions in various franchise designs..

Really that 15 inch Surface laptop 3 with and AMD Ryzen Zen+ CPU/Vega(Integrated Graphics) APU options, and some custom APU variants at that, sounds interesting. But MS’s prices are, like Apple’s, a bit too high for what could be had from some of the third party OEMs. So that starting price($1,199) on the Surface 3 laptop with the custom AMD APU options makes that a bit too costly. Maybe there will be sales on that come 2020 or Black Friday.

The only tablet that I’m currently considering is that new iPad with the A10 Fusion chip that’s been reworked into a 2019 edition low end iPad tablet offering. And that’s more because iPadOS’s feature set that allows for direct USB flash drive interfacing sans the whole cloud intermediary requirement to move files between a laptop and the iPad. So $329 is not really that costly compared to Apple’s other iPad SKUs.

The Surface Tablets have had their share of hardware issues but both Apple and MS can keep their high end tablet offerings as the pricing is just too high when compared to what the same money could get in a regular laptop SKU and with lots better features for the dollar.

I will say this, that if Apple begins offering a low end Macbook Pro variant with AMD’s Zen+/Vega(integrated Graphics) based APU, or newer 2020 generation APU, options at around the $800-$1000 price point then I’d be tempted.  AMD should have a Zen-2/Integrated graphics based APU hopefully on the market sometime in Q1 2020 and that’s really going to be upping the integrated graphics performance over this generation’s AMD Ryzen Zen+/Vega APU offerings.

If anyone that’s graphics oriented does get their hands on the Surface 3 laptop with the Vega(11) integrated graphics could they please give Blender 3D 2.8 a test try to see how that works out. And Blender 2.8 includes a whole 2D animation feature package that’s been integrated into Blender along with the Blender 3D graphics functionality that’s been in Blender from the beginning. Blender 3D is free and open source software.

Don’t forget about the Surface Go.  It’s priced close to the iPad, same size, same weight, more memory, slightly lower resolution, better cameras, similar battery life.

Advantage goes to the iPad on performance, easily, but the Go has the built-in kickstand and the type cover keyboard is loads better than Apple’s smart keyboard.   Plus the Go has USB-C.  Are you really keen on having to deal with Lightning cables for the next five years?  They do break easily…..

Unfortunately anything interesting and different won’t come out for another year. Just wonder how many device makers will introduce duel screen devices between now and then? The Windows 10X sounds interesting but again, too far off and no hands on yet.

You might be missing the much bigger picture: A microsoft “phone” running not windows, a microsoft product, but ANDROID a google product. That statement means a lot. Read this please https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/3/20896908/microsoft-windows-satya-nadella-importance-apps-services-android . Yes we already knew this. But this is the question. Is microsoft going to make windows into an android? If the article is right and notice that windows is pushing APPS not programs, it makes sense for microsoft to set up their os to run many more apps and at the moment android is the way to go. Google would love it if it had a “900 million” users over night. And it would help microsoft in moving things to the cloud and off pcs. Think about it. Your home computer is not just feeling information to just microsoft but google as well. The article suggest that lots of microsoft programmers might start working harder on android apps then windows. And if microsoft can use android for their cloud services, then windows becomes obsolete.

I can’t see where the article says anything like that:

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” says Panay in response to the possibility of Android being the future for Microsoft. “You want to give customers what they want in the form factor that they’re using. …
But what’s the right operating system for the form factor? And in this case, on mobile devices, Android’s the obvious choice. But anything [bigger than] that, Windows is everything.
