I have used Turbotax to pay my taxes each year.  I noticed their tax software for paying this year’s taxes says it only runs on W10 or W11. H&R Block seems to say the same thing.

Does anyone know of any comprehensive (can do Federal and State) tax software that will run under W8.1?

    Thank you.

Tax software usually doesn’t support out of date OSs that are not getting Security updates through the end of tax season.

Thanks.  I am holding out hope that someone may know of one that does support W8.1

Tax software is bound by Internal Revenue Service mandates and will only certifty that they run on supported software.

Will it run?  Yes.  Will the vendors declare it can?  No.

I tried installing the 2022 Turbotax software on my W8.1 PC and get a message that it won’t install on W8.1 (my paraphrase of the error message.)

I tried to do so from the DVD i had ordered, as well as online from Intuit.  Both ways failed.

Any ideas on a way around this?

If not, can some one point me to a thread that lays out how to upgrade my PC to Windows 10 (the nuclear option.)

            Thank you,

Browse down the cd to find the actual setup file .  This will typically not have the “check for supported OS” and then you can get around it

Sometimes the xml file associated with the setup executable needs a tweak too dependant on installation configuration of the program.
Drill down time IF required, good luck!

This is a closely related question:

What Tax Software  for Tax years 2017 – 2022 from a trustworthy source and DOES NOT DO ANYTHING IN or WITH the (any) cloud before I hit “send” and is available for Windows 8.1 or common Linux distros?

Tax years 2017 – 2022 is important as I may have to refile for some past years.  I do not want any of my personal information (especially tax or other financial information) to be floating around some tax organization’s or tax preparation company’s or any other cloud-based storage; at least not until I decide to send info for 2022 to the IRS.  I do not believe submitting tax returns (or revisions thereof) is allowed for prior years…but am not sure of that.

I seem to recall trying to find Tax Return Preparation  software a few years ago that ran on Windows8.1 but did not require me to do anything online until I had the return completed and was ready to send it.

All of the “Free Federal Tax Software for 2017(?)[whatever that past year was] expected me to start plugging in numbers online.  I do not mind downloading the software anonymously, but regardless of whose free software I am using, I do not want them to have a clue as to who I am or what numbers I fill in on the forms unless and until I decide to go ahead and file it electronically using their software.

Is it even possible to pick up free Federal Tax Return Preparation software online and then use it offline to run or recheck the numbers without selling your soul to the provider of the tax software?  I think I can still go to the Post Office or certainly an IRS office and pick up all the IRS Forms I might need and fill them out at home in private.

If I was using H&R Block’s software, could I just download it, do my return offline, then if the numbers required me to file an amended return, just sent it to the IRS via the ‘Net with the H&R Block software?  I am fairly sure that electronic submissions must be send via an authorized tax preparer (or software provided by same.)

I happen to live in one of the closer to perfect states that has no Income Tax which means there are several programs that will allegedly allow me to do my Federal tax return for free (with State tax returns costing extra for unlucky folks who do not live in places such as FL or TX. 🙂

I do have a copy of Lotus 1-2-3 (from SmartSuite 9.82) released in 2009 I think.  Decades ago, when Lotus was still in business before getting squished by a greedy, brutally monopolistic M$, I was earning a lot of my income writing financial planning software as part of a set of add-on programs built into 1-2-3 spreadsheets that worked with the templates I also wrote to do tax estimates for given years — so I generally just used my own product to do my returns.  After all, the financial planners, tax preparers, and other customers/clients who bought this software seemed to trust the results of my software.

The problem came about after I went back to finish a B.S. in Comp. Sci. then on to grad school to get about as far as I needed in a PhD Program in CompSci to turn in a thesis for a token M.S. degree after two years of work  (I put off actually turning in that thesis after writing it over twenty years later) and did get an MBA the following two years since my Doctoral Thesis Advisor seemed like he might want a graduate slave to do scut work such as porting bench-marking software from a Cray2 to some super-minicomputers his grant money had been wasted on.  I may still finish the PhD now that I like in a better place, but that is not near the top of my priority list for a few months, at the very least.

Being able to do my taxes with current software without sharing the information with anyone except the IRS would be very nice.

Whose software is the IRS suggesting people use these days?

None that I’m aware of for modern (2019ish and forward).  Older software yes, newer software no. Turbo tax desktop needs updates thus it will mandate an internet connection to get it up to date.  Tax code often does change during the tax filing year and thus we’re getting updates once a week, sometimes twice a week during tax season. Thus, it’s honestly not reasonable for any tax software to stay offline.

It will offer to get your tax information from online banks.  It will offer to efile your taxes.  All of these require an internet connection. When you efile you actually go through the vendor before it’s handed off to the IRS’s computer systems. It does not go direct to the IRS.

Keep in mind that if you print out your return on paper, there is a human being at the IRS service center that keypunches in that data. There has been many an identity theft on paper returns, so just because something is in the cloud, doesn’t mean it’s inherently more insecure.

Turbo tax allows amended returns or older returns after the fact.

The IRS does not recommend any specific software.  I use Lacerte at the office (tax software specifically for CPAs) and Turbo tax at home.

Lacerte at the office mandates that we log in to an online account which tracks what computer is submitting the efiling.  Thus, even though the software is installed on our workstations and the database is on our local servers, we have to log into the cloud to log into that software.

Can’t you run the software in compatibility mode ?

      • #2500702

Does Win8.1 have a Compatibility Mode for Win10 or Win11?
Tax software will no longer work on Win8.1 and earlier because MS has stopped supporting all those too.

In my experience, it’s the installer that has a OS checker.  If you go around the automatic installer and find the software installer that is typically in a setup folder UNDER on the cdrom.

I’m going to try to run in Compatibility Mode later.  Before that, what I tried to do (running the actual Installer file) – the 1st thing that it does is check for Windows 10 and/or 11.

There are files called: Autorun.inf, config.xml, 0x0409.msi, setup.ini, as well as the installer.exe. I’m wondering if 1 of these could be modified to delete the OS checking.

best thread on upgrading my Windows 8.1 PC to Windows 10. I don’t want to go to Windows 11.

Is your Windows 8.1 hardware Windows 11 compatible ?
If not, you have nothing to worry and update to 10 via Windows 10 Update Assistant
      Or
Download an ISO copy of Windows 10 (home/Pro) according to your current version from
HeiDoc.net and upgrade (open the ISO file and run setup.exe).

Remember to create a full image copy of your current system to external HDD.

      * upgrade to Windows 10 is still free.

Thank you Alex5723.  One question about the upgrade:  I have a Dell PC.  Will I run into an issue with the “Installed Key” and “OEM Key” which are the same?

        Dick-Y

        • #2500885

The W10 upgrade uses the existing W8.1 key and stores the registration on the MS servers. You do not need to do anything.

            Thank you Paul T,

            My bad.  I didn’t realize I wasn’t logged in when I posted my reply/question.

            I’ll try again:

I’m getting the error message: Modern Setup Host has stopped working.

I ran the Windows Update Trouble shooter.  It stopped 2 services and restarted them.

When I reran the MediaCreate tool, it got a little further and then chocked with the same error message.

I have a 2-partition system (OS and Data separate.)

            Could that be a problem?

Also, I have about 50GB available on C:\ for the Update to use.  Is that an Issue?

So I downloaded the ISO and started the process. It got as far as applying updates after rebooting.  It took a while and got to around 25% and then came the message: “undoing the changes made to your system.”

So, here I am back on W8.1.  Question: do I need to put everything back to a one-partition system (things like Desktop, Downloads etc. back where they start out on C:\); or is there something else I need to do?

      Thank you,

      Dick-Y

    • #2501106

do I need to put everything back to a one-partition system (things like Desktop, Downloads etc. back where they start out on C:\)

If you moved Windows system folders like documents, downloads, music, pictures.. to D drive you better move them back.

I never use these folders on C: and created my own on D:.

Disconnect from the Internet (Lan and wi-fi) and run the upgrade locally (no updates during upgrade).
After successful upgrade create a full image copy. Than install Nov. feature/security updates.

        Please bear with an octogenarian:

When you say “Disconnect . . .” do you mean ‘run it in Safe mode’ or do you mean “pull the connection from the back of my PC that connects to the Internet’?

        Thank you,

        Dick-Y

    • #2501181

Disconnected from the Internet and running from the ISO, I  immediately get the same error message as before:  Modern Setup Host has stopped working.

I’ve attached a  picture of my partition setup (after I put all the system files (like downloads, pictures, etc. back in User; and after going to 1 partition instead of my usual 2 (OS and Data.)

What’s different is the one called ESP is red and has never been that way until trying to upgrade to W10.

The one called PBR has always been red ever since I got the PC from Dell.

I hope to complete this update to W10 before I hit 90.

      Thanks,

      Dick-Y

Is your Win 8.1 fully patched ?
Which version of Windows 10 ISO did you download ? From which source ?

        • #2501268

Yes.  I religously patch my system. I always take a backup (Macrium Reflect Pro version) before patching and then apply the patches.

      • #2501271

One crucial point : disable any A/V software your are running before upgrading (you are offline so no harm can be done).

        • #2501290

Maybe off on a tangent . . . If my ESP partition shows Red and that is fouling up the unconnected ISO from running . . . when I 1st got this PC I made a backup of all the partitions on it.

So, I have a backup of the original ESP partition.

There’s no drive letter assigned to either ESP partition, but I am thinking (but don’t know how to do it) that there must be a way to replace the current ESP partition with that original one.

          Is that possible?

          THank you,

          Dick-Y

    • #2501239

I can’t see a 2 partition system from your image.
I can see one disk and one partition with C on it. The other partitions should not be available to use in Windows.

      Paul T:

My last response with the attachment was probably poorly written.

I have always run with a 2-partition system. Based on Alex5723’s continuos helpful responses, what I did was: 1) Put all the system folders back in Users. 2) Move all my other data over to C:\    3) Delete the D:\partition (using Minitool Wizard Pro.)  4) Resize C:\  to what you saw in my posting with the picture attached.

Then, I disconnected the Internet cable from the back of my PC, and run the ISO.

No joy. So I sent the reply with the attachment that you are commenting on.

Do you have the rollback log files?
      C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
      C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

View them in a text editor to see if it says what failed.

Access violation sounds like a permission problem, but it could be a hardware incompatability.

The results on the web suggest running “SFC /scannow” from an admin Command Prompt.
