I am setting up a template with common styles, headings, headers, footers, etc for the team to use. I am not sure about the difference between having everyone take a copy in their C drive and attach the template to the existing document and update styles, or setting this up in a workgroup folder or in a startup folder. Any advice, and rationale, on which way to go, would be greatly appreciated. smile smile smile

In order to incorporate the headings, etc. in a New document, the template will need to be attached to the document.

Global templates are useful for sharing, macros, toolbars/menus and AutoText, but not for formatting a document (unless macros in te global template are explicitly invoked).

      Ask yourself this question:

Are you using this template as a boilerplate? In other words, do you want to use the page layout, default text or graphics, and general look of the template to build other documents?

If you answer yes then you want to place this in either the template or workgroup template folder. The difference between these two folders is generally just where the templates are stored; on a network drive or locally on an individual machine. By placing the template in one of these folders you can see the template from one of the tabs when you click File–>New.

If you are going to update the template often, then a workgroup folder is the best way to go.

If you place the template in the startup folder it becomes a global template and applies to all documents. I suspect that you do not want to do this. The only time I put templates in the startup folder is if they contain only macros and/or toolbars.

      Hope that helps.
