I’ve been away for several days, and when I got home – I was no longer able to launch WINWORD from my desktop.  I got the message above (in the title).  All other MS apps work just fine (Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc)  I’m still able to open word files, but just can’t launch Word directly from it’s file location, from the start menu, or from the shortcut on my desktop.  I’m running Office Professional Plus 2013 on my desktop that is running Windows 10 (I know – I should be upgrading to 11, but I’m still leery!)

So, although this isn’t a crisis – it is extremely annoying when I want to create a new word document – I have to open an existing document, clear out everything else, type my new document, and then “save as” a new file name.  I’m not sure if something happened in a recent update???  (My computer obviously rebooted while I was away.

Any help or suggestions welcomed.  (I’ve run the “quick repair” as well as the “Online repair” from the settings/apps section.)

Any third-party antivirus in play, e.g. Norton 360?

Otherwise, possibly:

This issue may occur if Word program is running in compatibility mode.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClentX86 or ClientX64\Root\Office15.
Right click on winword.exe and go to Properties.
Now go to Compatibility tab and uncheck all the options that are checked.

However no Compatibility tab available

I just had this problem today with Word 2013 only.  Tried all the remedies so far and nothing works (Excel, PPT are working fine):

sfc /scannow

uninstalled office and re-installed it (I still had my Office 2013 key)

don’t have a Compatibility tab when looking at Winword properties so that did not help

I have noticed 2 things:

1. the .docx is set  to ‘opens with’ Word (via right click in Explore/Properties)  but Explore/Open with has appvlp as first option
2. the file icon for .docx is not the Word icon anymore.

Repairing didn’t work for me for .docx Office 2013 files in Windows 11.
The only thing that worked was clicking on “Reset all default apps” at the bottom at the Apps/Default apps option in the Windows settings
