The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is nearly thirty years old, so it was passed when the Web wasn’t even wearing nappies yet. So it is no surprise that it does not have anything specific about the access to the Web by the sight-impaired (such as older people, in increasing numbers), including the legally blind. Thanks to efforts to develop them, supported by private organizations, university groups, etc.,  such as the American Federation of the Blind, there are now technologies accessible to those with PC, cellphones, tablets, etc., to gain the level of access to the Web that is today indispensable to many, however their eyesight might be like.

The article at this link brings news of current developments to speed up the adoption and improve the quality of the aids currently offered (spoken text and haptic boards, for example), also of the arguments of some business groups questioning the applicability of current legislation (such as the ADA), as well as about the possible elevation of present legal proceedings on these matters to the US Supreme Court.
