• Thunderbird will not send email

    About 4 days ago T-bird stopped sending e-mails (new or forwarded) and gave this msg:

    “Sending of message failed.
    The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server mail.wavecable.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again or contact your network administrator.”

    I was on the phone with my ISP (Wavecable) for an hour the other night thinking that it was the problem (due to another problem I’m having) & they said it was setup correctly. Then I loaded another e-mail client (eM) & it sends fine.

    My version is the newest one (31.2.0) I like Tbird & don’t want to change – I’ve got lots of saved e-mails, etc. I have not installed any other software except for eM & this was before MS had the big update on Tuesday. However, I have update Windoze, which also did not make any difference. Any suggestions?

    PS The other problem I referenced is that Firefox (latest) is loading some pages extremely slowly but others normally.

      Try going into Safe Mode with Networking and see if Thunderbird works there.

      As far as Firefox being slow, you might have some browser add-ons slowing things down.

      Finally, run Task Manager and go to the Processes tab. Sort the list on CPU, with the highest number at the top. You will see if there is any process which is consuming a huge amount of resources. If so, that could be the culprit.

        Same thing in safe mode. (When I tried hitting F8 like MS says to do, all I got was a choice of boot disk, picked the correct one & Windoze came up normally, no safe mode. I had to use msconfig to get into it. MS sucks!)

        I have added no add-ons to Firefox.

        Nothing over 3% usage when in TM. Next suggestion?

      You could try sending yourself an email manually using Telnet or PuTTY. You have to type everything exactly, but you can then tell if the server is behaving.

      Sorry, I guess I forgot to say that when I downloaded eM (another e-mail client) it did send OK so I think the server is off the hook. I’ve got another post in the browser forum about Firefox not loading correctly & I somehow think these problems are related.

        Recently found that Thunderbird was so slow at downloading and sending e-mails, let alone moving them to a folder that I thought it had locked!
        Eventually I found that Ad-Aware ‘Real-time Protection’ was the culprit – I had to disable it to run Thunderbird.

      Erik, in my experience it is most likely that the problem is caused by some PuP running undetected in the background. Main suspects among others are Conduit and SearchProtect.

      Download and run ADWCleaner from here.

      When running ADWCleaner first click Scan, then check all the tabs. If the program found ANYthing click Clean and then reboot the system.

      I would be interested to hear about the result. TIA.

      Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode:

      To launch Mozilla Thunderbird in Safe Mode and get rid of extensions that cause problems:
      Make sure Mozilla Thunderbird is not running.
      Select Mozilla Thunderbird (Safe Mode) from Start | All Programs | Mozilla Thunderbird.
      If you do not have that entry in your Start menu:
      Press Windows-R.
      Type “thunderbird -safe-mode” (not including the quotation marks).
      Click OK.

      If it’s not caused by an extension, create a new test profile:

      To enable the Profile Manager:

      Select Start | Run… from the Windows Start menu (use the search box on Vista and 7), then enter “thunderbird.exe -p” and click OK.

      Note: If the Profile Manager window does not appear, you may need to specify the full path of the Thunderbird program, enclosed in quotes; for example:

      On 32-bit Windows: “C:Program FilesMozilla Thunderbirdthunderbird.exe” -p
      On 64-bit Windows: “C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Thunderbirdthunderbird.exe” -p

      I am having a similar problem. Thunderbird will not send gmail messages. It will receive them. It will send and receive messages from another of my email accounts. I can send and receive gmail messages using the web version of gmail, so it is not a password problem. I have tried disabling my firewall and my a/v program temporarily but that did not help. I have run ADWCleaner without success either.

      I resolved this problem by changing my outgoing gmail server security setting to STARTTLS and was then able to send mail from Thunderbird. 😀

      This strongly indicates a problem in your Thunderbird “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” settings. Carefully compare your Thunderbird SMTP settings with the SMTP settings in your “eM” (whatever that is) client to see if you can spot any difference.

      I did that. eM shows pop3.wavecable.com & smtp.wavecable.com while Thunderbird shows mail.wavecable.com for both, yet eM will send while TB won’t. I tried the eM settings but they didn’t work. I talked to the tech support people & reported this but they had no answer. I’m going to call tomorrow & speak to a supervisor who (I hope) will know more. We’ll see…

        naturally Thunderbird needs the same server names that work in eM.

        And for that matter, there are “port numbers” assigned to POP (incoming) and SMTP (outgoing) servers. You have to have these correct as well!

        And before I forget it, the settings for encryption have to be correct as well.
