From linked thread in blog:
Update: Looks like the latest update (installed 3Feb22) seems to have fixed the problem of displaying help. Curious if it has solved the overall problems encountered with installing TT 2021..
I’d sincerely hope that intuit update installation executables and inform vendors/ users to avoid a potential loopy scenario :S
Although it may be worth checking the executable file versions/ dates and posting here for change comparison.
Yeah – I buy and sell stocks many times over the year. Try manually filing that!!!!!!!!!!!!! i just pass my W2 from schwab to intuit and it’s done. Yeah it costs me $100 or so. cost of doing business. Hope they get this fixed. I don’t file for a month… Thanks for the heads up!!!

Following up on agoldhammer’s post –
It would be helpful if posters include the version of Windows on which they are having problems or have been successful when installing TurboTax 2021.
And also whether they initiated their installation with a DVD or an electronic download of the installation file from Intuit.
Thanks! 🙂
Is this a task for the weekend? What if you don’t use Turbo Tax?
I do mine manually and except for 2 times, I always have. The first computer tax app I bought back in the ’80s when you had to print the return and mail it in (this is Canada), did it wrong and instead of a refund I had to pay. The second one did a good job but was very expensive.
I worked a season at H&R Block, and with that experience and the fact that my return is fairly simple, I can do it very quickly. It’s correct every time. That’s why when tax scammers call me and say I owe money, I know that they are lying.
I left TT in ’14 and have — Never had one burp with TaxAct — (Premier download ver I use is more $$ than Online filing). TT Premier w State-Fed /e-File (was $130) is now $120; TaxAct is $130…..
The ease of e-Filing has come a long way since my 1st time.
W10 Pro 22H2 / Hm-Stdnt Ofce '16 C2R / HP Envy Desk-Ethernet - SSD-HDD/ i5(8th Gen) 12GB / GP=2 + FtrU=Semi-Annual + Feature Defer = 1 + QU=0
TT Premier w State-Fed /e-File (was $130) is now $120;
For anyone who’s interested, if you go thru Amazon rather than directly from Intuit, you can get TurboTax Premier currently for $54.99 (that’s without the state e-file). But once you have a copy of TT Premier, the state e-file add-on cost is only $20 more. So the total TurboTax Premier cost with state e-file comes to $74.99 thru Amazon. Just FYI.
THANKS!
says “State e-file sold separately” – where does it sell that and say how much it is?
THANKS!

krism: Once you purchase and install TurboTax, you can buy the state e-file add-on from within the TurboTax program. Here’s a post about how to do that from the Intuit community forum:
Windows 11?
I’m not sure what you’re asking about Win 11; but I’m probably not the right person to ask about that. I’m not currently running Win 11 on any of my “production” systems yet. (I don’t plan on doing that for at least a couple more months.)
(I’m on win 11 21H2) Thanks Tom-R!
So I bought it, copied the key from email, (on Mint), booted to win11, d/l’ed it, installed it, ran it: It wanted to install updates so I let it and that resulted in an update to 2-2-22. Did not restart automatically so I started it again. asked for key, copied it from my txt file, no paste menu so did ctrl-v to paste it in and hit enter. No prob with resolution (I am 1920×1080). So apparently that is all fixed.
I did it online with turbotax last year so there was no .tax file on my computer so it couldn’t input my last year’s return (I did go to intuit online and d/l last year’s .pdf but it wouldn’t accept that and they say so on their site. – I don’t think that is a biggie as I had last years return so made sure I entered name etc the same so as not to confuse IRS. so just had to enter name and addy, etc.) Bottom line here is never never confuse IRS!
I already have one W2 so tried entering that and after giving it about 4 things off that W2 it auto input it, so I have great hope it will auto input my 1099 in a couple weeks, else that will be hell.
So far so good. OP title prob fixed, $ saved. Now just waiting for my 1099 on the 18th or whenever.
THANKS.

krism: This is probably getting a little off-topic from the original Win 11 issue here; but (if you’re still interested) I think there could be a way to transfer your TurboTax data from last year’s online return to the desktop TurboTax product for this year’s return. A user at the Intuit forum (“VolvoGirl”) had a suggestion how to go about moving data from a 2019 Online return to a 2020 Desktop return.
Note that there doesn’t seem to be a way on the Intuit forum to provide a direct link to VolvoGirl’s post; but here’s a screenshot of the procedure she provided:
The Intuit forum page that has her post (among many others) can be found here:
Differences between TurboTax Online and Desktop
I have no idea if this method works or not; but I thought I’d let you know about it just in case you still might need it. Good luck.
Thanks Tom. Yeah, OT but nobody will care since it’s short. .
That link tells of a scary booboo in TT desktop(some 2020 forms had 2019) – hope its fixed! Thanks!
But good reminder to dump the full filing to pdf and check it before actually efiling!
This might be a good reason, though, to delay filing for another month to take advantage of any changes to the desktop program that might occur.
I will not try the suggested way to get past (2020) info since I am past the point in the desktop app (yeah I could restart it…) where it wants to input it and I think the only reason I might be interested would be if it somehow carried forward a part C loss, which you then chose to carry forward, which I had, and which I did not. (wouldn’t have done me any good anyway!)
Price we pay for trying to save a $…
Thanks!

I’m confused.
It appears that I successfully installed TTax Deluxe 2021 Federal and State on Windows 10 Pro 21H2 (10.0.1.19044, updated through January) from CD, with display resolution 1680×1050.
I had no problems entering my license code nor anything else. But after initial setup when I got to the screen that has the button to launch TTax and clicked on it nothing happened. So I closed that window and launched TTax from the desktop icon.
At that point TTax downloaded updates for both Federal and my State (by name) very quickly, in less than a minute. The speed surprised me. And downloading updates for my state surprised me because I hadn’t told TTax which state to download like I have had to do in previous years. Is that normal?
I noticed that my ‘State Refund’ box at the top of the TTax window beside the ‘Federal Refund’ box showed the name of my state, both $0 of course because I haven’t started yet.
From there TTax pulled in data from last year’s return and I stopped and exited.
I also noticed that this year TTax installed under the TurboTax folder in a subfolder named ‘Individual 2021′. Last year’s return installed in a folder named ‘Deluxe 2020′. Is that normal?
Thanks!
My experience with TTax 2021 is exactly the same as yours.
Folder name: Individual 2021
State name shown in box before download of state files (taken from last year I presume)
Win 10 21H2, 1920 x 1080 Video resolution, Intel onboard graphics 530
Your post encouraged me to grab my Schwab 1099 and start turbotax again. I have Premier. It took another update and said
program update was at 2-17-22
State prep was at 2-2-22.
So I input my my 1099 and in processing it found myself in a loop on income, called them, and they said, yes, there is a known prob with loop and they will get back to me and I just rcd a email for that bug. probably take them a few days to fix it.
Yes, when it says it will restart, it does NOT, you have to start it yourself.
My TT installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Individual 2021
My tax files are in E:\My Documents\TurboTax
Last year(s) I did it online so I don’t have previous years info and had to input it manually.
If you have problems, start turbotax and click on continue to continue your filing. If none, click on start a new return. Once there, if problems, click on help / turbotax help center F1 and follow the instructions to call them. I had them call me back – took about 20 minutes.

krism – Thanks for your response.
I’m reasonably comfortable that everything is OK, just a little concerned that some things were different from the routine I’ve experienced in previous years.
I had no problems with turbotax in 2022, but have had a problem with the 2023 program doing automatic updates in Windows 11. After trying several things, like disabling the antivirus and taking ownership of the turbotax install folder, and even confirming that I am the admin and reinstalling turbotax, I found out this morning, 4-5-23, that my surfshark vpn was holding up the update process. I turned off the vpn and was able to update turbotax normally. Problem solved! If anyone else has a vpn running, you might try disabling said vpn and then updating turbotax. It worked for me.
