..Because Unity, and now GNOME, are so radically different from the traditional Windows interface, some people flocked to Linux Mint and its familiar Cinnamon desktop environment. Mate and Xfce are Mint desktop options too, but make no mistake, Cinnamon is the crown jewel of the distro. Sure, there are other nice aspects of Linux Mint, but ultimately, it is familiarity with former Windows users that make the OS attractive to many.

Unfortunately for the Linux Mint developers, their operating system has essentially become obsolete. You see, as of today, Ubuntu Cinnamon has become an official Ubuntu flavor. Why should anyone use the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint with Cinnamon when they can just use the now-official Ubuntu Cinnamon instead? The efforts of the Linux Mint developers are simply unnecessary at this point…..

Making Linux Mint obsolete? Lol What non-sense and a click-bait headline and article from beta news. But it gets them some web traffic. While Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, there is a lot more to it than just the Cinnamon interface!

Linux Mint 21.1 LTS (Cinnamon). Windows 8.1 Pro virtual machine (with Classic/Open Shell) via VirtualBox.

I looked at Cinnamon when I first migrated an old system from Vista to Linux but I preferred Mate.  And I still use Mate in my Linux Mint VM.

      meh clickbait
Linux Mint also has the LMDE distro that uses Cinnamon
with all the great and future utility updates and introductions
provided by the Linux Mint development team, I actually prefer it to the LM mainstream distros anyway.

On my internet computer I replaced Windows 7 with Linux Mint Cinnamon a month ago, and I am delighted.

In other words, still enjoying what I have and not exactly receptive to anyone saying “now you must change” (shades of Microsoft).

So the question I have is this: What’s in it for me?

You get some telemetry and a proprietary software repository (Snap store) with Ubuntu. So you can be closer to how Microsoft operates. 😀

Both of these are examples of some things that have been removed by the Linux Mint developers (since Mint is based on Ubuntu) in order to keep things open and provide the user with a system they can completely control and trust.
