About a week ago Susan Bradley wrote a list of rules, the last of which was “uninstall VPN before installing updates”. I assume that rule applies every month? It seems MS installs many things without notifying me, so how do I protect my system from those installs? I am neither a novice nor an expert but I do look to you folks to help me keep my business as efficient as possible. Windows 10 H0me 2004 (will do update to 21H1 soon), Proton VPN paid subscription, CyberPower gaming PC from 2011 which has been used for photo editing, AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Processor, 3.3GHz, 8GB RAM. Machine not eligible for Win 11 upgrade. Any advice and/or insights is much appreciated. Happy New Year !!!

I believe Susan’s warning did caveat that some VPNs may cause WU to not work. I use a VPN and have had no trouble using my VPN while downloading WU. You might experiment and see if you do have a problem. If you do have a problem I think the update is unlikely to start properly and, in that case, you can terminate WU and just not use your VPN in the future while updating. BTW, Win 10 does have good checks and balances to check the quality of the update, and can automatically terminate the update and allow a retry. I know, because that has happened to me, only once fortunately. Good luck.

      No, just feature releases.

        Susan,

Two things I wanted to clarify: 1. Do you suggest complete uninstall of the VPN or merely not connecting to it? And, 2. Is Updating from 2004 to 21H1 considered a Feature Release? I assume that monthly security patches are not Feature Releases. I hope these questions are not too simplistic, I am a detail person; I grew up in a Philadelphia where milk wagons still were pulled by a horse. Playing in the streets was sometimes a challenge. LOL. Life’s been an interesting journey. Thank you for your professionalism and well written insights.

Is Updating from 2004 to 21H1 considered a Feature Release?

Yes, it is a feature update. There is no point in updating to 21H1 when 21H2 is recommended.

For how to keep your Windows 10 under control and block for now Windows 11 you can follow :

      Or

You can skip using Windows update and use WUmgr instead (I do).

Thank you for the kindness of a reply.

You write “There is no point in updating to 21H1 when 21H2 is recommended.”

I cannot seem to do that because WU has several updates ahead of 21H2.

And, I’m getting error messages when I try to do anything.

#1 is update to remove Adobe Flash Player Version 2004 kb4577586  gives me  error code 0x800706ba

#2 is 2021-11 cumulative update preview .net framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 2004  kb5007289  gives me error code 0x8007012f

#3 is update to 20H2 (failed to install – error 0x8000ffff)

I thank you in advance if you have any advice on these.
