Good Evening
I am in UK and use a Broadband supplier called Plusnet – a subsidiary of British Telecom (BT)- for my internet access. My OS is Windows 10 21H2 on a desktop PC mainly.
Recently Fibre Broadband became available in my locality and so I decided to apply for an upgrade to my supply.
Things did not go smoothly and resulted in me losing all broadband connectivity for over a week. This was restored yesterday (9.8.22 in UK) but I have experienced some very strange effects subsequently-:
Following Susan Bradley’s advice, I always have my Windows updates ‘paused’ to well avoid the “patch Tuesday” dates and this was in place as usual on my desktop before I began the fibre update process.
The restored broadband appeared to be functioning correctly on the evening of 9.8.22.
This morning, however, quite unexpectedly, the computer notified me that a restart was necessary in order to finish the installation of the latest Windows updates !!! I had not even opened the update page in Settings and these August updates had already downloaded of their own accord.
Completely non-plussed I did allow the installation to continue after checking that a restore point had already been set up by Windows.
In addition to this major unexpected change I have also lost a couple of log-in details (including here on Ask Woody ) – almost as if I had just run a cleaning programme like C Cleaner.
No major damage appears to have been done but I just wonder if anyone could suggest a reason for this happening and is there anything to be done to prevent a recurrence in the future.
Regards,
Roy.
