    Last night, my
Alienware M11x R2 with Win7 Ultimate indicated that I needed to install an update. The update began normally after I clicked to shut down the computer. Since last night, it has been stuck at this screen:

“Please do not power off or unplug your machine.

    Installing update 1 of 1”

After more than 12 hours, the fan is running and the normal lights are on, but it has not progressed from the blue screen with the message: “Installing update 1 of 1”

What can I do from this point?

    Thanks.

Do you have Win7 ESU’s?  When something takes this long I bite the bullet and do a hard reboot.

I do not have the Win 7 ESUs.

        Hard re-boot.

Re-started Win 7 in Safe Mode.  Logged in. Shut down

        Re-started normally. Logged in.

Win 7 opened normally. Outlook opened normally. MS Project opened normally.

Win 7 Ultimate shut down normally.

      Hi Bugwart,

I have been thinking about what might have caused your issue. Try launching IE to see if you get a popup message to configure IE. If you do, then choose the options you want, and then close IE. Then try reinstalling the windows updates. I recall having this issue in the past. Another past issue with windows updates and IE was that I had to disable Protected Mode in IE in order to get a windows update to install. After the update successfully installed, I launched IE and re-enabled Protected Mode.

      Best regards,
