I currently have Home Office 2016. I do not save files on the cloud and do not want to use Office 365. Could someone list the advantages and/or disadvantages of upgrading my current version 2016 to: (1) Home versus Pro, and (2) version Office 2019 versus Office 2021.

    Thanks.

Honestly, unless there’s a new feature you must have?  I might wait until October 2025.

Office 2016 for Windows will get security updates until October 14, 2025.
The mainstream support end date is October 13, 2020, while the extended support end date is October 14, 2025.

“What’s new in Office 2021” (but note some new features are missing in the Long Term license.)

Yeah. What he wrote is the thing I’d choose. I waited until security patching for Office 2010 stopped, then I switched to 2019. And I used $50 local machine licenses so I don’t depend on Microsoft’s mistakes in its unfavorable-to-me cloud subs.

The only difference between Microsoft Office Home & Student and Microsoft Office Home & Business is that the Business version includes Outlook.

If Home Office 2016 works for you now there is no reason to move to a newer version of Office.

Um, I have Office Home 2016, and it has Outlook! Every version I’ve had of non-business Office software has had Outlook, since probably 2004, or so!!! :O /

Office 2016 security patches are expected to end October, 2025 (also the time expected to be the end of Windows 10 support).  Office 2019 end is October, 2025 the same as Office 2016.  Office 2021 end of security patches is October, 2026.  If you have Office 2016 Outlook, it may not support oauth for gmail and some other email servers, but the new versions may not work perfectly either especially with pop3.  Office Professional includes Access, Publisher, and Outlook.  https://softtrader.eu/blog-microsoft/differences-office-2021-home-student-business-pro/

If you do not use outlook and you are not having complaints from collaborators about your files not behaving right, I see little reason to upgrade.

Thank you for the information. Could you answer one additional question that I have concerning your response?

You made two statements in your response concerning Outlook: (1) “If you have Office 2016 Outlook, it may not support oauth for gmail and some other email servers, but the new versions may not work perfectly either especially with pop3”, and (2) “If you do not use outlook and you are not having complaints from collaborators about your files not behaving right, I see little reason to upgrade”.

In Office, I only use Word, Excel and Outlook 2016 in my work, but I do use them extensively. I do not even have a gmail account, and I use Outlook 2016 daily to send Excel spreadsheets and Word documents. For years, I have not had any problems with Word, Excel, or Outlook.

Question: I feel very comfortable with Office 2016 and I am in no real hurry to make Bill Gates even wealthier. Taking into account your above statements about possible issues with Outlook, under my circumstances, would you recommend staying with Outlook 2016?

        Thanks again.

If you don’t have a gmail account I think you will probably be fine with Outlook 2016.  If your email server is Microsoft, with the right settings Outlook 2016 works fine.  This is very techy details: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/troubleshoot/administration/modern-authentication-configuration

Regarding word and excel file compatibility, I think most things will be ok, but for a company that uses tracked changes and multiple people making comments and edits to a file your version might be too old.  If you were in that situation though I expect the company would force you onto the cloud version anyway though.

So I think you are fine with Office 2016 until 2025.

Anonymous: “Office 2016 security patches are expected to end October, 2025

I have Office 2016 for the Mac, so I checked after reading the above and … A red note next to each installed Office application in a list that opens when trying to start their updates reads: “Needs upgrading”, with a (?) net to it. Clicking on that opened a small window with this explanation: “To get updates you need to upgrade Office.” I do not know what it is like with Office 2016 in Windows, but for the Mac, 2025 was some time ago.

Ex-Windows user (Win. 98, XP, 7); since mid-2017 using also macOS. Presently on Monterey 12.15 & sometimes running also Linux (Mint).

Hi, I have office 2010 with ESU and Office 2019 home and business to install in the near future–at computer hardware upgrade.  I wonder why Office 2019 does not appear not to be shown on the Master patch list?  Or did I miss something?  Would if be better to go to Office 2021 than install Office 2019? I am not into the subscription version of Office.  Thanks very much for your help.

        Yes. Office 2019 is listed:

        Master-Patch-List-Office-2019
