I have installed the February Windows 10 updates and have now encountered an issue related to the malicious website matter which is discussed in Susan Bradley’s March 6 column.

For years I have been recording online radio with Replay AV8, both under Windows 7 and then under Windows 10. Until the February updates, when I opened Replay AV8, I received a message from User Account Control: “Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?” I would click on ‘Yes’ and Replay AV8 would load in and I could then use it.

With the February updates installed, the message is still from User Account Control but has fundamentally changed. It now says: “This app has been blocked for your protection. An Administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more information, contact the Administrator.”

I have not been able to figure out how to run the program. Is there a way to do so?

      Try to “Unblock” the file.

Right-click on the exe file that is the App and select Properties.

Switch to the General Tab and locate the Unblock option.

      Check it and click Apply.

      Or for more detail:

Bypass “Administrator Blocked You From Running This App” in Windows 10 (softwarekeep.com)

I hope it works for you. (I remember when I first saw this… )

Many thanks for your reply! But with the February updates, the “unblock” alternative is no longer available, and I believe the multiple alternatives in the link which you were good enough to provide also pre-date those February updates. So what I ideally need, I believe, is to hear from someone who, like me, has only just encountered this problem after installing the February updates.

What if you right mouse click on the shortcut to the application and go into properties and then to the compatibility tab.  Click on Run as administrator.

          Launch the application.

Maybe get some red ruby shoes, click them together and say – this is my computer, I can do what I want with it.
