      FYI,

Ghacks – VeraCrypt 1.26.7 update brings major changes: read this before updating

      • “It took the developers of the open source encryption software VeraCrypt more than 18 months to release VeraCrypt 1.26.7. It is a big release that addresses several issues and makes other important changes, including support for new features.”
      • “VeraCrypt 1.26.7: Compatibility changes
        —————————————
The official release notes list the following compatibility changes:

TrueCrypt Mode support is removed in this version. There is no option anymore to mount TrueCrypt volumes in VeraCrypt 1.26.7 and future releases.
Removed support for RIPEMD160 and GOST89 algorithms. Volumes that use these algorithms can’t be mounted anymore in VeraCrypt 1.26.7 and future releases.

The developers suggest to use the previous version, 1.25.9, to convert volumes before upgrading.

On Windows, VeraCrypt releases are only tested on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. While the software may still run on Windows 7 and 8 devices, there is no guarantee anymore.”

      • “Closing Words

VeryCrypt users need to make sure that they don’t run into incompatibility issues when upgrading to the latest version. Most users won’t be affected by the changes, but those who still use TrueCrypt volumes or volumes with the dropped algorithms may want to convert these to supported formats before running the upgrade.”

      HTH.

Unfortunately your post passed me by, and yesterday I was bitten by the very problem mentioned in the Ghacks article. (An article that doesn’t really do justice to the serious impact the software change potentially has, IMO)

To me the change is a quite astonishing piece of software development bad manners. Not so much that they removed the ability for VeraCrypt to use certain encryption algorithms that used to be supported (things change, life moves on), but that when you try and load volumes encrypted using such algorithms, the message that you get simply suggests that you’ve entered the wrong password

Sooo, What you have to do (what I will spend most of today doing) is:

        1. Uninstall the latest version of VeraCrypt

        2. Install the previous version (the one that reads TrueCrypt encrypted files)

        3. Change the encryption algorithm for any affected files (which, in my case is going to be ALL of them)

        4. Uninstall the old version of VeraCrypt

        5. Re-install the latest version

        6. Test that you’ve changed the files to one of the usable algorithm (not a simple one-click process, open to repetition fatigue errors)

        7. Rinse and repeat, if necessary

I discovered the problem because I’d been working on the volumes that very day, so I knew for certain that I was trying the correct passwords. But when I was trying to find out what was going on I found at least one poor soul on a forum somewhere being advised that they must have just entered the wrong password

And, imagine that you’d only come to use a volume with the new version of VeraCrypt after a year or so. You would surely think that your memory was playing tricks, and you’d misremembered the password, and that your data was lost forever

I know it’s free software, and we should be thankful that it exists, but really, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

      FYI

FWIW I just came across these discussions relating to issues that may crop up (e.g. the mounting of existing encrypted volumes) after the release of VeraCrypt 1.26.7 that may be of interest to folks here:

Thanks for that. I’d already figured out what needed to be done (as in my post above), and spent yesterday laboriously doing it for all my current encrypted volumes. I’m not going to bother trying to do the same for backup versions. I’m keeping TrueCrypt installed (hard to get a copy of it now, I believe) and I’ll use that if I ever need to access the old backup copies

I do think that the VeraCryptp developers could have implemented a rather more… user-friendly… way to make the change, rather than just leaving us thinking that we’d forgotten our own passwords, but, mwah, that’s most developers isn’t it? They know what’s best for us, and we just have to smile and suck it up
