I am using a Windows 10 HP laptop.

I have used ProtonVPN successfully for several months.  For the last couple of days, I could not boot ProtonVPM.  When I click on the trusty icon (or try to start the app from Windows), nothing happens.  I thought the app was corrupted, so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled.  It worked yesterday, but today, the problem still exists.

In something  perhaps related, booting Windows in general has become very slow, sometimes taking 10 minutes.  I finally found that during the boot, Windows Defender is doing a lot of activity.  Is Defender doing some sort of search without my asking?  Is there a way to suppress that.  I am using Malwarebytes, but no third-party antivirus such as McAffee.

I checked on the website for Proton that shows the status of all of their products. (https://status.proton.me)  It seems it’s not you — they are having problems with the VPN.

Hope this helps.  I check frequently when I can’t get online, etc.  Most times they are “doing something”.
