We can use some help.

We are considering purchasing a new tablet and would like to find one that is waterproof/water resistant.

Does anyone have experience with rugged tablets?

There are some “military grade” tablets.
The question is how much rugged you need.

I do not think that we need a “military grade” tablet.

Our primary risk/exposure will be water/rain.

My Samsung phone is waterproof – it complains if you get water in the USB socket so it’s not really waterproof IMO. Maybe they do a tablet version?

Right now we are leaning toward the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active series of tablets.

But are looking for any real life experience from members of the group before making a final decision.

If they are like my phone they are quite slippery to hold and I leave fingerprints on the screen, but no had an issue apart from that.

The Samsung runs 4 years old (buggy) Android 7.1.
It seems OS was never updated since release.

What’s buggy about 7.1?
That’s akin to saying Windows 7 is buggy. Doesn’t stop it being suitable for loads of people.

Since 7.1 there were thousands of security updates not to mention 4 OS updates.
Yes, Android 7.1 is insecure…

According to this Samsung page, the Active2 gets quarterly security updates.
Can’t see any reason to avoid at this stage.

I’ve been watching the Hurricane Laura on Weather Channel. I think they are using iPads standing out in the wind and rain. And FOR SURE they are water/weather proof.

Are the Weather Channel’s iPads in waterproof cases or are the units themselves water resistant?

Probably in cases (they don’t look bulky) but maybe the iPads are somewhat waterproof themselves. Have not researched that b/c I’m not in the market for one at the moment.

Yes, as there are with any OS, but updates quarterly – per the page mentioned above.

ZDnet like the Pro and rate it higher than an iPad for rugged use.

Looks like the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active PRO running Android 9 (Pie) is the front runner for our new tablet.

Now we have to see if the Android device supports the apps that we want to use.

Have a look at Best rugged tablets of 2020: Water resistant, drop-proof and shockproof slates and also check IP codes (i.e. Ingress Protection) then search for ‘tablet IP code <whatever level you are looking for>’.

To those that suggested Samsung tablets, in my own experience, as much as I like the products, they are very limiting in the upgrade area.  Typically you get one upgrade, not much more.  My wife has an iPad that is close to 8 years old; upgrades were still available until about 6 months ago.
