Has something happened to login? I cant see it where it was before (top right corner), it is not a problem, just asking if this is the desired version of web page. I can get to account administration via “My Account” link.

So, this will post as ANON since there is no way currently to login?

      Where’s this My Account link?

Hmmm…I see that “your account has the ability to upload any attachment….” so am I logged in? (The computer has had problems today and had to be forced to boot and usually booting or even rebooting means that even with a tab on Basilisk always open to this site that I will need to login).

Love this site…but a bit confused at the moment.

    • #1735097

Hope you fix it. We love the site. Why the new name and email? Is that from the windowssecrets clan? Woody never minded anonymous posters, they did. Guess I will give up on helping people like I have for 2 years now.

      • #1735283

It’s a temporary situation. Woody still espouses the rights of anonymous posters, and it’s not related to windowssecrets in any way.
Hang in there – your continued input is appreciated by many 🙂
We hope normal service will resume shortly (no ETA yet).

To login, until things go back to normal:

All the way to the right in the menu at the top of this page (and also of the Main one where everybody lands after clicking on a “favorites” link to come to Woody’s), is an item called “My account.” Click on that, and that will get you to another page with several options, including “login.” Click on that and: Voila!

But still you won’t see your member name and plus badge (if you have one) at the top of the brown right sidebar…

To log out if you can’t see Log Out on the top menu bar, click on My Account, where you will find a Log Out link.

Even though the Recent Replies widget is M.I.A., the “New Posts: Last three days” (and other Search for Topics link options) are still functioning.

I hate to point this out but the site is faster.

Even after the upload  process finished a few days ago, page refresh was 10 seconds at best here in the UK.

Hmmm, not sure about that. Clicked on the Reply link, and it took almost half a minute to load the form.

      • #1736784

In my experience (admittedly biased), it’s much, much faster.

I see it most behind the scenes – loading the MVP-only forums works in seconds, not minutes, and my administrative tasks work great.

Now to get the last little bit cleaned up….

        • #1738322

First coming to this site from a new tab takes about 15 seconds just to get a response from the server. It’s also not too snappy when clicking around on here, but once it starts loading, it’s fast.

I also find the site isn’t as VPN friendly as I would like and when I am connected to certain countries, I get a WordFence blocking page instead of this site. France, Luxembourg, Iceland and Czech Republic are ones I get this page with every time, it seems. Sometimes others as well like Germany and Estonia, but sometimes they work fine. Others like Spain, Finland and Sweden always seem to work fine.

The page basically says something like “Advanced Blocking” is the reason I am getting those messages based on country. Is this something with WordPress generally or is it a customization for this site specifically?

For quite some time, loading the site has been slow, primarily on Firefox….noticeably MUCH faster since the ‘We were down-but now we’re back up and limping’.  Seen much faster loading on all browsers.    so..??

    • #1735571

Wasn’t too concerned as to how to navigate for login or posting because I knew it was still available, but It did cross my mind that y’all must be going like wildfire trying to get everything put back together. I don’t have a My Account tab in Basilisk which has been my default browser since Oct 2017 and has always worked fine here.

But after switching to Fx 60.6.3 ESR (I dislike the GUI so much I rarely use it), I saw a tab on the right side of Direct Message tab that is titled LOGIN. Of course, I was NOT logged in as I rarely use Fx now. So, I logged in and checked the Remember Me box and now that Login tab has disappeared on Fx 60 and there is no way to reach My Account that I can see.

So, are we supposed to NEVER click Remember Me if we want a way to reach My Account? Or is this problem just temporary?

No, the Remember Me isn’t related to seeing My Account. I would suggest reducing your screen zoom (ctrl -), which should allow Firefox to display that option, and the Log Out option too. 🙂

Also, you can click My Account from anywhere/anytime, to access it without the link showing.

But seriously, it appears that there is a change to the message-manipulation options at the top of each message. I don’t remember seeing before the verbs to Move and to Split; I’m not sure about Spam and Report.

Also, on Woody’s top post, are Close, Stick (To Front), and Merge. Perhaps these accompany the change noted by mcbsys above – 1736443.

It is pretty slow going, just now. On the plus side: the thread “looks” are back to normal, login is once more normal — after I clicked on “remember me” once, some logins ago.

Is it know what was the reason for the problems? For example: there was a big storm up East before the problems here set in, that caused widespread blackouts from Virginia to New York. If the servers used for this site are somewhere there, maybe that caused them to fail.

I’ve always had Direct Messages and do now.

The site was down most of today…it just came back a few minutes ago and is so extremely slow that I’m going to avoid it for awhile.

Here’s the message I was getting from Word Press most of the day and evening here in Hawaii:

(Image was to be inserted here).  See below.

I didn’t see a way to upload an image so I clicked on that Add Media button.  What is that!!???  Weird…I was able to navigate to Print Screen’s saved snapshots and then pick the one I wanted and then I clicked to upload it and got taken to a page where I saw about 50 files of OTHER PEOPLE’S screenshots and music!  Over on the right side of that screen, there was a message that my screenshot file could not be uploaded because I was denied permission to upload files here.

Still a lot of problems here. But it is a great tech site with really nice folks and I know it will get better.

      • #1743320

The Add Media button is one problem that still hasn’t been resolved (it’s not meant to be there), but you should still be able to see the Select File button below the text editor box, same as usual…?

The Direct Messages was previously available, it’s just that old messages were not showing. They are again showing.

We had a short while offline in the last few hours, but in general, the site has been accessible most of the day.

The Add Media button is one problem that still hasn’t been resolved (it’s not meant to be there), but you should still be able to see the Select File button below the text editor box, same as usual…?

I can’t properly reply here on Basilisk (current version), Waterfox 56 or Vivaldi 2.5.1525.43 that I am on currently. if I try to reply to Kirsty, I get flipped back to the very first post in this thread. But I see buttons that are different in this text box from what I see on gecko based browsers. I see a b-quote button and an image button. I don’t have those on my preferred browsers. Also, don’t have them on Fx 60.6.3 ESR.

I am not surprised that we are not supposed to see the Add Media button! 😉

No, NO select file button beneath the text editor box on any of the above browsers. I thought maybe it was just Gecko based ones so that is why I tried Vivaldi but I don’t see it there either. (I do see an “image button” but it wants a url! I don’t feel like looking up my login creds for Imgur and uploading there, etc).

All I see below the input box is
“Notify me of follow-up replies via email” with a checkbox on the left side
          and
Cancel Submit buttons on the lower right side. (On the gecko based browsers, I only have a Submit button…no cancel button).

Vivaldi is much faster in loading this very long thread than is Basilisk or Waterfox. Both of them take over one minute on a 200 mbps down connection. Unfortunately, I don’t care much for Vivaldi and have it primarily if I have to go to a site that hates gecko based browsers. BTW, this site is HORRIBLE on Edge! In case it might be relevant to the problems I see here, I am using Windows 10 Pro version 1803.

Maybe it’s an add-on in your browser that prevents you from geting it? It started yesterday, along with the Lounge seeming to fall apart.

Also, what about user titles having switched from “Ask Woody Lounger” to “Subscriber”?

          • #1744849

The “AskWoody Lounger” – to – “Subscriber” change is clearly a bug. I’m adding it to the long list.

I tried to replicate Paul T’s floating gray box – multiple user roles, multiple browsers – but couldn’t. Wonder what in the Sam Hill is going on. ???

Anyway, I’m compiling a list right now for the devs. If you’ve hit a problem that isn’t documented in this thread, please yell real loud!

            • #1744856

Woody: I am not sure if this is another bug for your list, or an intended new feature, but I’ve noticed that now, when pasting an URL link to some article relevant to an ongoing discussion, sometimes, instead of the old brown line of text with the URL’s name, one gets inserted there a whooping big picture, resembling a flash screen, with a view of the banner of the article itself, or some such image relevant to the article, plus the name of the publisher in a standardized, if classy, white-on-blue logo assigned to the publication.

And now something else: moments ago, when I clicked on “Submit” to post this reply, after the “page loading” ring-thing twirling for a while (it is slow-going at the moment, although in a random fashion — some times response is almost instantaneous), I was sent back to an older version of this thread without your own entry or my reply — or without some more recent entries, as well. After another while of yet more twirling, I was put in this, now updated page with both entries showing. Perhaps just a very temporary glitch, but I note it here, in case there is more to it than that.

WordPress tries to be smart about expanding some references. I haven’t figured out why or when.

The slow reload… that’s just a symptom of slowness, I think.

I don’t see the floating grey box in the original post, though I do see it in the attachment in Paul’s post above.

Looking at it closely, the small icon in the middle seems to be saying, “This file doesn’t exist” or something similar. There was no attachment or link in that post, so maybe the forum software is looking for something that it shouldn’t be?

Yep, no menu options at all visible on the right-hand side “wood panel”.  Site very slow for me (about 1.5 minutes to get logged in).

Woody, might it be best to start a new thread with a list of all the issues that you have at present. We can than add new ones knowing that they’re unreported. It takes a lot of looking to see if whatever problem we’ve got has already been raised.
