Not sure if I have W10 V 21H1, but if not, then the owners can move it to its proper place.

When I say “Weird happenings”, I really mean it.  Specifically, I was working on a Word document, when both screens went blank/black and the computer would not respond except to a <CTRL> <ALT> <DELETE> and that seemed to shut things down.  I turned everything off, turned everything back on and rebooted my computer and this is where “weird” comes in.  1)  only one monitor was recognized and for that one 1024×768 was the only display that was possible. It was not possible to change the resolution of this monitor. It was like I was back in the old days when only one monitor was allowed, colour okay, but it was of a fixed resolution.  2) monitor number 2 was on and black, but was not recognized by the “system” and therefore would not display anything.

My attachment to the web was working and my Firefox browser was able to access web sites, otherwise I would not be able to post this.  I ran Norton to check for viruses and this came back negative.

So…I am looking for answers as to why this has happened and more specifically, what happen to cause this reversal back to the “good old days, so to speak” and how can I get back to the previous settings of my previous settings of my computer and both its monitors.  Any insight will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Make sure you have a complete backup first…

Could be a hardware problem: loose cable or bad cable or failing video card or monitor

Less likely: video device driver issue

Even less likely: monitor configuration issue

Without an image/system backup you can’t recover the settings. Even then it’s a full restore.

Check in Device Manager to see it if the missing hardware is showing.

Video driver.  I would see if you are up to date with a vendor driver.

Or videocard, if applicable. Had something similar at the office this week. Re-seating the videocard solved the problem.
