They totally have me mystified, They seem to be borders of some kind.
I want them to be black and the same thickness as the other (?) borders.
I am not used to Word 19. I think I hate it.

Easy to get black borders in a table in Word 19. I revised your Word file (attached) simply by:
1. Selecting your entire table.
2. Clicking on the Borders menu icon in the tools ribbon in Word.
3. Clicking “All Borders”.
If your default border is set to black, this will fix your issue.
If it’s not, or it’s set too thick, click on “Borders and Shading” (bottom choice in drop-down Borders menu). Then choose your style, color, width, etc.
I say don’t give up on Word 19.
