I have encountered an error when backing up files with Windows 10 Backup. The error code is 0x80070002.
I wonder what could be causing this error.

The error log says “Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\foldername1” and “Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\foldername2”

The two folders are under my username. See 1st attachment.

I also have created a Library for them and in this Library I have included these two folders. See 2nd attachment.

Can anyone help me figure out what is causing this error?

I Googled the error code you say you got for Backup, and came away with the following two links from Microsoft’s site. Please read through them for a possible resolution. They refer to Windows 7’s backup, but that is what is used many times, even in Windows 10.

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/error-code-0x8100002f-and-or-error-code-0x80070002-when-you-back-up-files-in-windows-7-34dbce33-69f0-ee34-c96d-d89c6583b05f

I hope these help. If not, please feel free to ask here for clarification about anything that might make you scratch your head in “puzzlement”.   😉

Thanks. I did use Google to see if I could find something, but I didn’t use “Backup” or “Libraries” in the search. So, these links are helpful.

I think I found the problem at the first link:
        “Scenario 1 cause
This issue occurs if you back up a library that contains custom folders that are located under your user profile.”

Folder 1 and Folder 2 are folders I created under my user name, so that makes them ‘custom folders’, right?
user profile? Is that the same thing as C:\Users\username (i.e., ‘MyUsername’ in the screenshot?)

I wonder if that means “directly” under your user profile/username?
What if Folder 1 and Folder 2 were subfolders under a custom folder?

I was able to backup a Library whose folder was a folder on the Desktop. Desktop is under the user profile/username and Desktop is not a custom folder. But, the folder under Desktop is a custom folder/one I created.

I guess that means that Folder 1 and Folder 1 have to be under some Default Folder, such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Saved Games, Pictures, (in other words, some high-ranking folder that has a pre-set, Windows-determined icon), right?

Why not use a proper backup app like free Macrium, paid Acronis…instead of the so-so Windows 7 backup ?

I keep saying to all of those who give me your advice: Macrium is really, really difficult to understand. I tried Aoemi and it wiped out the contents all of the OEM recovery partitions (for Image, for DELLSUPPORT, and for WINRETOOLS)! I’d rather stick to this one.

There are no bells and whistles.

A Windows library is a link to a location, e.g. The Documents library points to %USERPROFILE%\Documents, or as you correctly say, C:\Users\username.

Have you created folders in that location?

If Windows won’t backup those folders there isn’t much you can do except move them, or use another backup.

      cheers, Paul

Have you created folders in that location?

Yes, I have created folders and files at/under C:\Users\username\Documents. And Windows by default creates a Library that points to that location.

I also created a folder at/under C:\Users\username. Let’s call it Folder1. (It’s at the same level-depth as Documents (i.e., a ‘child’ of ‘username’, as is Documents, and thus, a ‘sister’ to Documents)

I then created a Library and included Folder1 in it.

But, because Folder1 is a custom folder and is directly under C:\Users\username, it won’t be backed up and it causes error 0x80070002.

I discovered that by reading the 1st link that @Bob99 provided in his first reply.

Who knows, maybe another backup program would have the same difficulty.

Yes, the solution is to move Folder1 so that it is under a default Folder and not under a custom folder.

I know that works because I have another folder (let’s call it FolderX) that is on the Desktop (i.e., C:\Users\username\Desktop\FolderX). I created a Library (let’s call in LibraryX Library) and included FolderX in it. But, because FolderX is not under a custom folder (Desktop is not a custom folder), it backs up OK. You might think it would be backed up twice — once where it actually is under Desktop and again via the pointer to it that is in LibraryX Library, but it backs up only once and it causes no error.

Why don’t you just use a decent backup program?
I have used EaseUS ToDO Free and Aomei Backupper Free without problems.
People here swear by Macrium Reflect Free.
There are paid versions of each of those if you want more features.

The only times I’ve used Windows Backup, it hasn’t worked.

There is nothing complicated in any image backup software if you choose the basic needed : create a image backup of your PC – all drives (all partitions, all files).
There is no use of picking partitions, folders…for image backup
With whole PC image backup you can restore any drive, copy any folder, file…
The price of external HDDs drives for keeping your image files is very cheap.
      WD 4TB is $90, 8TB is $150, 18TB $410…

When I used Aoemi, I evidently made the wrong choice and I have no idea how I did that. but I do know that the data in OEM Recovery partitions was deleted. And I received no help at all from the vendor in understanding what mistake I made and how not to do it again.

I want something simple — one without a lot of choices that lead me down the wrong path.

I’m trying Backup and Restore (Windows 7) for now until I get the hang of it.

Yes, I know that a WD external 4T drive is now $90 — less than another WD 4T (same model) that I bought last year for $105.

Anyway, this topic is about an error in the Backup and Restore (Windows 7), the reason for which I have figured out, with the help of @Bob99, who didn’t suggest that I use some other backup software instead.
