What Edge Chromium Updates to Use for Servers

I have WSUS downloading updates, and have selected Edge to get those updates. But the Master Patch List Edge update is just 4559309, which hasn’t downloaded, and when I browse that, it appears to only apply to Windows 10 specifically. We have Edge based on Chromium installed on some of our servers at several levels, Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2 and 2016.

The Edge updates that are downloaded are:

• “The new Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 Version xxxx…”  The problem is that none are version 1607, the version for Server 2016.
• Microsoft Edge-Stable Channel Version xx Update for…”   None of these updates have KB IDs, and I don’t have anything in the Stable/Dev/Beta channels, so I don’t know which, if any, to allow.

We also discussed not installing Edge at all, but since Chromium it appears to have been much more reliable, and is certainly better than leaving IE as the default browser, in case something is clicked that does try to browse.

Anyway, let me know what other info you need and please help me figure this out.  Thanks!

That will help me set it up, but it doesn’t help with which versions and which builds are stable enough to use.  I don’t know if Edge merits the type of attention that the versions of Win10 get in the Master Patch List and patching articles in the newsletter, but I am hoping for something like that.

I overlooked the recommendation for version 89, so really just the build and whether it will be covered in the MPL in the future and I will be a happy camper!

Edge enables automatic browser updates by default, so you always have the most recent build. In my opinion there would be little point in Edge version info in the Master Patch List. Later this year enterprises will be able to opt for new builds every eight weeks instead of every four weeks:

For now I just use their normal release not developer.

Later on this year they plan to come out with an Enterprise slower release version and I’ll let you know when that one comes out. That’s what I would recommend for Servers.

Thank you both! I will modify WSUS to stop downloading the Edge updates then, and will get the installed Edge changed over to a Stable build and monitor for auto updates.
