• What happens when 1709 updates to 1803?

    When a Feature update happens,

Does the Feature update to 1803 remove all the unnecessary 1709 code and previous monthly updates that will not be applicable to 1803?

Will the 1803 Feature update install all prior applicable Quality updates?

    What about 1803 specific micocodes?

Is there a Woody list of KB’s that should not be installed?  I’m thinking about the 4-5 ver 1709 KB’s I have on hold because I was following 1709 advice, but never kept track of other versions at the time.

When 1803 installs, it moves the 1709 files to a Windows.old folder and installs (upgrades to) 1803. If you do this through Windows Update, it installs the current version of 1803 preserving your applications (if they are compatible) and your personal files. Assuming the install goes well, the Windows.old folder is there in case you want (or need) to roll back to the previous version. You have a 10-day period in which to do this if you desire.

The other option is to do a clean install using the downloaded Update tool (not through Windows Update). You can choose to preserve your personal files.

Once past the 10-day rollback period, Anything pertaining to 1709 has no relevance.

Since Win10 updates are CUMULATIVE, any update you “hide” and do not install will be superseded by any later CU you install, and will become unavailable through Windows Update. In other words, skipped versions (Builds) will be superseded if you install later Builds. Any non-Windows updates MAY remain hidden if they are not superseded by later non-Windows updates.

PK, thanks very much for the info.

Would a “clean install” also preserve 1709 installed applications or just personal files?

After the 10 day rollback period, do the old 1709 files automatically delete?  Or can one find them and manually delete them?

Does the Window Update route preserve prior 1709 settings (eg: privacy, Group settings, etc)?

A “clean install” is not an upgrade and does not preserve non-Windows applications. You have to reinstall them.

After the 10-day rollback period, you can run Disk Cleanup to remove any old files left using the “Cleanup System Files” option.

That’s up for grabs. Sometimes it does and sometimes not. Any new options in the Settings App will (of course) be MS defaults in their favor. I always go through all the Settings App options every time I even update to a different Build. Afraid I don’t trust MS. Most Group Policy settings are respected unless MS has removed or changed the way they work. I also go through any other settings I’ve changed. You ALWAYS have to turn System Restore back on, for example.

I have had a thread in Windows Secrets Lounge concerning my new Lenovo pc’s inability to install 1803. It tries and tries over and over. The latest solution offered to me is to download the latest W10 via the MS Media Creation Tool onto a usb drive, which I have done. I just noticed your post here from 8/27/18 and wonder if clicking “setup, exe” in the usb drive is a “clean install” and will effectively wipe out everything else on the pc that is not W10. I do not want to do this. Lenovo shipped me a usb drive with complete “recovery media” which would in effect wipe out everything.

After double-clicking setup.exe, you’ll be asked what you want to do:

        Choose what to keep
