    Hey Y’all,

With all the complaining about Win 11, 10, 8.1, etc. I thought I’d post what I think Windows needs…

    • Windows tools like Task Scheduler, Disk Management, etc. that remember the last screen settings, i.e. window size, column widths, etc.
    • All Windows tools should let the user adjust font size & face and remember the settings.
    • Windows tools that don’t give you entry boxes that are large enough to see the whole (or at least most) of the entry, I’m talking about you Scheduled Tasks, so you can easily make changes in the right place within the command.
    • While we’re on Task Manager how about the ability to turn on History for a single task, useful for debugging new tasks, vs on/off for every task which overloads the logs.

Ok, you get the drift, make the stuff that the OS should be doing more useful instead of thinking up all kinds of stuff that most of us don’t want or need but look good in the annual “look what we’ve done” PowerPoint presentations.

FYI: Microsoft if you haven’t figured it out yet all those bells and whistles you keep adding, usually copying work someone else has already done, should not be baked into an OS they should be addons, you know like the stuff you copied, NOT PART OF THE OS. And let’s not forget most of us will keep on using the stuff by the independent developers which is most often better, faster, and less error prone, than your “oh aren’t we inventive” knockoffs!

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

If you like, please, isn’t some hardware independence too much to ask?

will that help if the Windows business model is to squeeze out as much profit as possible?

      Hi RG.

Windows (and lots of third party software) uses Task Scheduler and Disk Management, but Windows (et al.) use them in source code, not via the UI.  Those tools have been basically unchanged for a couple of decades.

I would venture to say that the vast majority of Windows users never venture into Task Scheduler or Disk Management, so Microsoft very likely gets virtually no complaints about those particular tools.

My workaround for the small text boxes is working from Notepad and using copy/paste until I get it right.

        Bbearren,

Yeah, I’ve taken to exporting Tasks to xml files, editing them, then importing them back into task scheduler. That said, we shouldn’t have to do this.

we shouldn’t have to do this.

I couldn’t agree more.  However, if we look at the complaints about the UI, etc. that are getting ignored, the small minority of users that we are in surely get short shrift.
