When opening a single file, it creates two copies! (Excel 97)

I have one Excel file that has suddenly started very strange behaviour. When I open it in Excel, it loads two copies into memory and uniquely identifies them by appending a colon and then a number. For example, if the file name was myfile.xls, when it is opened it creates myfile.xls:1 and myfile.xls:2 in Excel. If one makes changes to one copy, they are simultaneously done in the other copy!!

What on earth would have caused this psychotic behaviour? It only happened to one file and it happened all of a sudden.

all you’ve done here is open a second window on the same workbook – window / new window – just close one of them and then save and the :2 should dissappear

Oh do I feel a bit sheepish!

I was actually asked by another employee what he had done to do this and I could not for the life of me figure it out. He claimed he merely turned in his chair and as he turned, he hit some key(s) on the keyboard and Wha-La! the second window was open. So, it makes sense it was a real easy fix since it was created so easily.
