Last week when my backup reminder spreadsheet popped up (scheduled task for Friday 9:00am) my custom Ribbon looked like this:

    Old-Custom-Excel-Ribbon

Today (6/17) it looks like this:

    Excel-Custom-Ribbon-Change

I’m on 32 bit 2108 Build 14326.20962 then I ran update in O365 and it changed to 14326.21018 but the menu is still different.

On my test machine which has 64 bit Office 2205.15225.20204 it still shows the old way.

    Thanks Microsoft…NOT!

It may be your computer, but it is MS’s software.

      Best wishes to you.

It’s hard enough mastering some of these applications to have some oblivious twit at the developer end making even more work for customers by changing the UI unpredictably.

Memo to developers: focus on security flaws and bugs. If you wish to change the interface, then (1) warn people that the change is coming, and (2) give the customers a choice whether to adopt the change or stick with what they already know.

You can’t just blame the developers for UI changes. More typically, program management is to blame. Marketing is always pushing to do something new and/or stupid. So sometimes you end up with cosmetic changes that just shuffles the interface. Current end-users loose out, since learning how to do something with a new interface, takes time.

        Some ideas:
        – Stick with an older version of the application that still gets security patches but no functional updates.
        – Prevent functional updates until you are ready to deal with the fallout of new features, UI, etc.

Last week … my custom Ribbon looked like this:

Today (6/17) it looks like this:

It appears you added the Developer tab between screenshot 1 and screenshot 2.

        B,

The developer tab is a selection I made and not the issue, sorry for the confusion.

Just to make sure, I added the Developer tab to my Test machine w/o any change to the display of the “Image Menu” as shown above.

Is this for real? Having to tolerate the “ribbon” is bad enough, but this takes it to a whole new level.

Who in their right mind would consider this an acceptable UI upgrade? Let’s clutter things up, make things harder to find and more confusing, and waste more valuable real estate.

All I want is a standardized UI designed for desktop use. Drop-down menus across the top in a legible, reasonably sized, serif font. Colored icons that that make use of my expensive color monitor and GPU. Windows that are real windows. And a file explorer that retains my detail and column preferences ……..

I feel your pain RetiredGeek. It hurts my eyes just looking at that mess.
