Has anyone had similar experiences? Periodically, without warning, my Windows Explorer crashes. Nothing works, except for a forced power-down, followed by a reboot. There’s nothing specific in the Windows Log and a Windows Security Quick Scan shows nothing. This happened half-an-hour ago, but, interestingly, the only event I can actually trace is an Opatch sync at about that time. I’ve now disabled the Opatch agent. Let’s see what follows, if anything. could it be Opatch?

I’m running Windows 11 Pro, up-to-date as of Susan Bradley’s latest patch update.

I’m not surprised, according to the 0Patch FAQ Windows 11 isn’t even supported!!

Thanks! Much appreciated. I’ll uninstall it immediately.

Well, I uninstalled Opatch, but the mystery crashes are still happening, periodically. I’m stuck with Win11 on my new laptop, so has anyone any more suggestions? Thanks!

      Try this:

      • Open an elevated CMD prompt.
      • Type: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
      • Let it finish
      • Type: SFC /SCANNOW
      • Let it finish
      • Reboot

The first time I looked at this topic I wondered why someone with Windows 11 should have need of Opatch.  Your updates and patches should be coming from Microsoft for free.  Or is it maybe that Opatch is more reliable?

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake as soon as you make it again.

Many thanks! Actually, it was my mistake: I took the advice on an AskWoody e-letter a few months ago to install Opatch. Looks like it was a waste of time. In any case, by sheer chance following this latest crash, I think I’ve found the problem. It was probably an update malfunction on the pre-installed Office suite on my new(ish) laptop. dealt with.

Why should a patch to any installed software crash OS ? Shouldn’t just the software crash ?

Good question, thanks! I’ll keep an open mind. Meanwhile, AskWoody’s right: avoid Win11 if you can. I hadn’t any other option, I’m afraid.

      I hadn’t any other option, I’m afraid.

As long as it has an active Win11 license, you could “downgrade” it to Win10 (a Win11 license also entities you to use the “equivalent version” of Win10.)

The catch is, doing that requires a clean install of Win10 so you’d lose any installed apps and have to reinstall them.

It’s also “possible” you might lose access to some of the built-in devices in your PC if they’re the absolute latest state-of-the-art hardware because there’s no approved Win10 driver available for it.
