Why was my System Volume Information folder so big?  On an external 3TB drive that I use for weekly backups, it was 302GB! I could see it in Treesize Free, but not in File Explorer. Poking around on the web I found that the System Volume Information folder holds restore points. I went to the control panel and found that (a) system protection was turned off for that drive and (b) the folder size was over 300GB. I deleted all the restore points, and now the folder is down to 60 bytes, a big improvement. But I am puzzled.

        • System protection was turned off, so why were there over 300 GB of restore points? I use this drive for weekly Windows Backup and Restore backups and occasional Macrium Reflect backups. Do either of these create restore points?
        • Am I in any danger for having system protection turned off for this drive? It is turned on for my main C: drive. What would be the point in turning it on for an external drive that is usually not plugged in?

There is no need for restore point for the external drive, only for C drive.
The default for system restore size may have been set to 10% of the drive size.
