        CONFIGURATION:
        Win 10 Home 64-bit Ver 2004

        STORAGE:
        HDD: Seagate ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB (SATA)
        EXTERNAL DRIVE: 4 TB Western Digital WD My Passport D260 USB Device (USB) (SATA)
        Both with sufficient free space and w/o errors (checked)

        ISSUE:
        Weekly backup copy worked fine up to December 14
        On December 21 backup freezes at 97%
        ERROR 0x800701E3 showed once

        I will appreciate forum members help.
        If the recommedation is to use a 3rd party software please specify.

        Actually your answer is a huge manual, very clear an detailed.
        I will be working on it during today (including WD Diagnostic tool)

        If you have already checked both drives for errors, bad sectors, etc. then you might want to check the USB cable.

        1. Make sure the USB cable is plugged in snugly on both ends.  Maybe the cat walked on it.
        2. Plug the USB into another port on the PC side.
        3. Replace the USB cable.
