Still, I’m happy because it fixed a crash in one software that we use. On 1909 it would always crash if user tried to open a file in it (it would open standard explorer file open window) and he tried to use search box, on clicking in search box it would hang for 2 seconds and then crash. No problem like this on 1903. I installed update 4532695 and it fixed this

About the only time I use Search is to look for .tmp files to delete.  I have Windows Search disabled in Services, which actually only disables Indexing, but I don’t use it to search for my files, I already know where my files are located.

For the way I use Search, this particular issue is a non-issue.  Search still works, it’s a bit slower with indexing disabled, but then when I’m just doing a bit of cleanup, I’m not in a rush.  Microsoft will eventually get it sorted out.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

Does it keep you local file searches private or will it be using some freemium monetization business model via data harvesting/metrics selling? I see some features require administrative permissions and really I’m wanting to not have my internal system file searches blabbed about all over the Internet as is done with MS’s Windows 10/cloud based ecosystem business model.

I also look for any sorts of Explicit Privacy statement from the authors of any software and some third party vetting as well.  But from what I can see it appears to be OK, but that’s going to be after I have done my due diligence.

They never aknowledged the deferral settings UI issue, which was more important

anyway, i suggest to use the mach2.exe tool to disable this bugged feature, and create schedule task to run the tool on logon

I want to search for recently modified files using the FE search box. The only way I can figure out how to get the search ribbon to appear is to type datemodfied: in the search box when I am in the folder I want to search. This seems to be like using your elbow to scratch your nose. Is there a better way to get the search ribbon?

For any folder you have open in FE, click View > Sort by > Date modified.  You don’t need Search for that.

But, I want to filter the results so that I get just the files from last week or last month.

After you’ve sorted by Date modified, click View > Sort by > Descending.  Your newest files will be at the top of the list.  Still don’t need Search, just a few mouse clicks.

But, this doesn’t give you on the same screen last week’s (just as an example) modified files that are in BOTH the folder AND all of its subfolders.

Frankly, I think there should be a Search tab at the top of the folder screen in addition to Home, Share, and View.  Each tab has its own ribbon and the Search ribbon has the Date Modified dropdown menu and and an option to set the search for subfolders.  And I’d like to see a way to set default-folder options for searches, whereby these options could be different from the View-folder options.  In other words, I might want to have the the ‘folder’ option set for ‘Search’ tab, but not for the ‘View’ tab.

Of course, these are not bugs, per se, but it’s clear that the File Explore search is very underdeveloped.

 

By folder screen, I mean This PC > OS(C:) > Users > Username > …. > foldername

What I refer to as “click eating” where mouse functions don’t work unless a window has the focus, has gotten worse and worse over the last few years, even on older Windows versions. I can’t even scroll windows without clicking them first. All the extra clicking is giving me RSI. It’s almost like they want to sell more mice.
