Which Windows OS are you running ?

Bitdefender is at the top of A/V software (together with Kaspersky).
Free A/V software is limited in functions. You are better off with paid versions.
For Windows 10, Windows Defender is good enough for most users.

Never run, in real time, 2 A/Vs at the same time.

For Windows 10, the built-in Defender is fine for most people. I’ve used it for years and never been infected. Additionally, I have the free version of Malwarebytes installed. Every 3 – 5 weeks I run a scan with Malwarebytes. Then I run a free online scan from one of the big A/V vendors. Those scans act like a second opinion to backup Defender. All A/V engines and detection rules are slightly different and therefore you may have different results.

On top of that, good online behavior and a regular backup regimen are musts.

I am curious about the same thing as StantheMan (Mr.) – when I bought my Win10 PC the tech guy said that Windows Defender was perfectly adequate for home use.  At the time I still had almost a year left on Norton subscription which is now expiring in 3 weeks.

I’ve been using Norton and then – similar to joep517 – I run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AdwCleaner every 2-3 weeks.

Since Microsoft appears to being trying ruin Windows Defender I was curious if Windows Defender was enough and if not then what the best 3rd party to use is.

I use Bitdefender Total Security. It has a bit of a learning curve and support can be cumbersome but judging how msft has messed up win10 on a monthly basis(it seems)I dont want them in charge of security on my system. Prior to windows security(defender) there were very few users who didn’t get a 3rd party AV – either free or paid. I feel you get what you pay for(cept for win10 o course). Defender is known for false positives- to my way of thinking, a false positive is as aggravating as a real positive if the program is protecting you. To each their own!

On the topic of Antivirus-malware and Win 10, my experience, if i may, from the onset of getting new computer and Win 10 came-with, as did Trend Micro AV for a year and so did the service of BB’s G Squad that seemed to be part of the ‘deal.’ But it was kind of annoying to opt-out w/confirm for sure after 2-3 times checking and Bank showed debited anyway…ok. But the AV i got recently is Total AV and it’s running pretty good, has malware byte scan, reasonable cost and the Pro Version’s a little more, of course, but for the version i have’s fine. I tried other one for the same price and ditched it when i learned that the features was a BTW-ala carte-like extra fee or cost even if it was 5 more dollars a month to get a secure connection!? That’s like the ‘key’ that comes with the vehicle isn’t a free-key, but well-that’s kind of extreme comparison but anyway, this Total AV is a good pick if for any interests or just to compare your line-up of selection, etc. Just thought i might offer in that.

Thanks DriftyDan – I agree 100% with Microsoft fraking things up lately.  I’ve always liked Norton, but ever since Symantec was purchased by Broadcom and combined with LifeLock its quality has gone hill.  Also – I can’t stand the daily pop-ups that ask if you want to ignore in the future and then next day give you same/similar pop-up & too many false positives (at least they let you overrule).

I just want to thank all of the feedback regarding antivirus and windows 10 protection.

It seems to me that nearly all the tv channels you watch you get bombarded with Norton 360 with life lock making it seem that we are all going to be victims of cyber crime one day. I get emails from Malware bytes,EFF.org, and others that make it  clear that privacy and government watching and spying on you that you might think that this was Ch**a or Ru**ia. So my concern is antivirus enough or do we need a supplemental protection? Thanks again all.

      • #2255382

        Supplemental protection from what?
Files with viruses / malware should be spotted by your AV.
You don’t go to sites after getting a pop-up saying you have a Windows problem.
You don’t respond to phishing emails.
You hang up on cold callers.

You are the only supplemental protection your computer requires.

        cheers, Paul

      I fully agree with DriftyDonN.

On top of running BitDefender Total Security, I am using MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and HitManPro on top of that. Mind you: certainly not running these additional two as real-time scanners, but totally disabling all of the live-scanning features since it may well interfere with Bitdefender. Instead of live scanning, I have set up both to perform a scheduled scan each night. Those scans prove not to mess up things for BitDefender, while adding two extra layers of protection at the same time (and FAR better than MS Defender ever will!).

    • #2255326

I used to run CryptoPrevent as supplemental protection, until my AV provider advised (in response to a question) that it was not necessary, because they covered the same ground.  The AV I use is Emsisoft Anti Malware, previously from Germany but now based in New Zealand.  They don’t do too badly in the comparison stakes.

In case you’d be interested: there’s a nice PC security channel on Youtube that is very informative – and rigorous – on testing the many different security alternatives. And I mean: rigorous testing it is , using in-the-wild-malware/ransomeware samples. (“Do NOT do this at home!” 🙂

Here’s a nice run when merely using Windows Defender against ransomware:

I suppose you may think twice about using merely Windows Defender.
Don’t. Just don’t. Always use a (working) second layer of protection on top of that.

I hope this serves anyone well.

96% ransomware blocked without enabling Controlled Folder Access (which is Defender’s primary ransomware protection).

No reason there to think twice about using merely Windows Defender.

I recently came across an article about Controlled Folder Access, part of Windows Security apps. It is supposedly useful for defending against ransomware.  So I tried it out to see how it worked and to get a handle on side effects. For  a day or so I set up various folders and network shares as protected and let various processes through, like QBW32.exe (Quickbooks). Every thing seems to be working fine. My mission critical stuff works. So all is well . . . but wait. Suddenly youtube videos have no sound. Zoom meetings with computer audio and native Windows beeps and alert audios  work fine but not YT videos.

Nothing appears in the block access listing that relates to video audio that I can see: Blocked-apps (I don’t know how to embed the example into the text)

Anyone have any ideas how Controlled Folder Access and audio for YT (and others) works?

My Windows version is 1909, build 18363.1082.

I have a lifetime license for Malwarebytes Pro (before they went to the subscription model) that still gets updates; it’s now on v4.1.0.  I have it run a nightly scan.

That and Windows Defender are all I use, together with good online behavior and scheduled regular drive images.  Using Task Scheduler I have Windows Defender run daily quick scans and weekly full scans. Windows Defender and Malwarebytes work very well together, and don’t get in each other’s way.

Create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates, in case you need to start over!

Like bbearren , I also run Defender & Malwarebytes (also lifetime). What I do differently, and everyone will tell you NOT to do, is is run them concurrently! To do this you tell Malwarebytes not to register with windows.

I’ve been running this configuration for years, back to the Security Essentials days, with out issue and/or infection, of course YMMV.

I won’t tell you that, either.  Like you, since MSE I’ve run them concurrently.  That’s what I mean in saying they work very well together, and don’t get in each other’s way.

I’ve never had an issue or infection of any kind, either.
