Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it.

AskWoody PlusJust started happening today: “Windows 7 build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine” is displaying on desktop, lower right corner.
Windows Update icon disappeared from taksbar. Can no longer launch Windows Update from Start menu.
Navigated to Control Panel > System and Security > System. Under Windows Activation section it says “Status Not available” and “Product ID: Not Available”.
I’ve had this machine since 2013. Dell XPS 8700 Win 7 Home Premium SP1 x64 (Intel)
Any ideas why my PID apparently just disappeared, rendering the OS “not genuine”? Any chance it might be related to use of W7ESUI_0.2 to update?

AskWoody PlusUPDATE: The machine slowed down and essentially locked up so I restarted it. The “not genuine” message is no longer showing. Also shows “Windows is activated” and the PID is populated again. I did nothing else to resolve, just the restart.
Hope it was a one time glitch and won’t resurface. meantime, i’ll be moving important files, settings, etc to my brand new Win 10 machine.

ManagerIf memory serves me correct, when a computer can’t read a certain file/location (apologies I can’t remember off the top of my head) it freaks out and reports not genuine. As you pointed out a reboot will often fix it up.
