We have a Windows 8.1 laptop that has a huge amount of pictures in the Picture folder.  There are also multiple folders within the main picture folder.  Suddenly, the main picture folder loads very slowly, then eventually freezes the entire laptop.

I realize that windows is trying to build thumbnails for all of these pictures.  I have researched online and have found several options, but not sure what to do.

One was to optimize the folder for general items.  This solution seemed to apply to the Download folder.  Would it work for the Picture folder?

Two was to change the thumbnail to icons.  Not sure how to do that.

The only other solution we could think of, was to create multiple folders and drag and drop  picture folders to the new folders.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

        Optimize for “General items”:

        • Right-click the folder and choose Properties.
(Or if already within the folder, right-click white space and choose Properties.)
        • Switch to the Customize tab, set “Optimize this folder for” to “General items”, and click OK.

By default, on a machine Windows has evaluated to have good enough performance, the three views that do not show thumbnails are Small Icons, List, and Details. You can get to them from the View tab. See attached screen shot.

Alternatively, you can turn off the display of thumbnails altogether in System Properties:

        • Right-click the Start button and choose System.
        • In the left pane, click “Advanced system settings”.
        • On the Advanced tab, click the first Settings button, found under Performance.
        • In the list of check boxes, uncheck “Show thumbnails instead of icons”.
(Note that this will switch the radio button above from “Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer” to “Custom”.)
        • Click OK in both dialogs.

Regarding organization: I understand how time consuming it could be to go through all of your memories and sort them into sub-folders, but if you’re willing to do it, it can be rather rewarding. Especially when you want to find something later.
