I am trying to help a friend get rid of her Windows 10 login (which presently is using an old Microsoft account with an old email address) and replace it with a local login.

My first step is creating the local login. But when I try to create the local login, it is forcing me to use Windows Hello, then puts me in a never ending loop of having to confirm identity and wants me to enter the previous Windows Hello PIN, which she says she never had, or maybe she just doesn’t remember. But when I select “I forgot my PIN”:, in order to create a new one, it asks first for the old PIN!

I don’t want to use Window Hello but it won’t let me bypass it.

I’ve researched it a bit, and it seems Windows Hello is required with a MS account login, but is not supposed to be required with a local login.

    Am I missing something?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

      Thanks for that link.

I have already done a similar process. But when I clicked on “Sign in with a local account instead.” and entered the name I wanted for it, that is when it put me into the loop where it wanted me to setup  Windows Hello and required the previous Windows Hello PIN which we don’t have. And telling it “I forgot the PIN” just kept going around in a circle and asking for the PIN again.

Turn off the “Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts” option and then click the Remove Windows Hello PIN button.

That “should” completely disable Windows Hello and allow you to create the local account without being prompted for the PIN.

      If that doesn’t work…

If she has Win10 Pro, disable Windows Hello in Group Policy as follows:

Open Group Policy by pressing WinKey + R, enter gpedit.msc in the run box, and then press Enter
Goto Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon
In the right-hand panel, select Turn on convenience PIN sign-in and click Edit policy setting
        Set it to Disabled
        Click OK
Close Group Policy and reboot for it to take effect.

If she has Win10 Home, disable it in the registry as follows:

Open regedit by pressing WinKey + R, enter regedit.exe in the run box, and then press Enter
        Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Settings\AllowSignInOptions
Locate the DWORD entry named value and modify it from 1 to 0 (zero)
Close regedit and reboot for it to take effect.

      Thanks for information.

We eventually were able to futz around enough that we finally found the right combination that allowed us to remove Hello. Can’t say I know exactly what is was though. But all is good now. Thanks
