My Windows Update is not working on a Vista Home Premium machine.

Following the errors it leads to the BITS service not running.

When I follow instructions to start BITS – it starts and then immediately stops

With the following statement

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop automatically if the are no in use by other services or programs.

How can I diagnose what is stopping BITS?

Downloaded and ran the link in both 32 Bit and 64 Bit modes – when executed, both said my machine didn’t need ‘the fix’.

So I am still unable to get Windows Update to work.

Have you tried any of the manual steps in the article ?

Performing a clean boot may ID a conflict which is causing BITS to crash and opening a command prompt as an administrator and entering the cmd sfc /scannow to see what it has to report.
