My sister has Outlook; I have Thunderbird. Whenever she sends me an email with an attachment, the attachment is a useless item called “winmail.dat”.

She was unable to fix it on her end. But I found about a Thunderbird add-on called “Lookout”. I installed it in Thunderbird, and I was then able to successfully open the attachment she had just sent me in an email.

Go to addons-dot-thunderbird-dot-net and search for “Lookout (fix version)” (without the quotes). Download it and install it as an extension in Thunderbird. Your winmail.dat troubles will be over!

      Hi Jim!

I had the same issues a few years ago, but I was able to get the sender to change their configuration for mail sent to me to be sent in HTML instead of RTF.

This sounds like a godsend for anyone unable to successfully change a configuration within Outlook!

BTW once you go to T’Bird 115, from what I saw on the product’s page you’ll have to go to version 6 or 6.1 of LookOut (fix version) because 5.4 only goes as far as T’Bird 102 but the other versions start their support of T’Bird at version 115.

Thanks for that information. I knew I would eventually have to upgrade my version of Lookout, but I just wasn’t sure how long that would be. Man, I just got this one; I hope I can keep using it for a while!

I sent my sister a link to the Microsoft article which told exactly what to do to fix it. She did just what they said, but it didn’t fix it. So I fixed it on my end.

I guess I’ll have to be on the “lookout” for when I need to upgrade!
