I’ve seen a lot of breathless prose around the blogosphere about that way that the next version of Win10, version 1903, will give patching cont

What about changes in Group Policy ?

        We still don’t know.

Even if somebody told us about them, I’m not sure I’d believe it until we see the shipping product.

From the Newsletter 16.13.0, “As best I can tell, this is a one-way setting: You can reduce the number of paused days, but you can’t increase it. If you decide that your 15 or 20 days isn’t long enough, you’re out of luck — ”

With drive imaging, there are no one-way settings.  Just restore a drive image from before you made that “15 or 20 days” decision, and then increase your interval.  Windows will awaken “from the recent past”, and Microsoft has no control over that.  My scheme is described in Partitioning/Backup Options on my website.  We have auto insurance, home owner’s insurance, renter’s insurance; PC insurance is pretty simple, and there are no monthly premiums to pay — it’s pretty much one-and-done for setting it up.  Task Scheduler can handle the drudge work of keeping drive images up to date; mine are weekly.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We were all once "Average Users". We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems, we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

So, you’ve tested this procedure, and the Update Servers in Redmond (or wherever) don’t keep at their end some record of your Pause actions?

So, you’ve tested this procedure, and the Update Servers in Redmond (or wherever) don’t keep at their end some record of your Pause actions?

I can roll my system back to version 1803.  How will Windows Update server’s pause records handle that?  Will they push a 1903 update onto an 1803 installation because their pause records say that I’m due for it?

Or more realistically, will they query my system to ascertain its current update maturity and status?

My logic says that only the latter approach is practical in any real sense.  Microsoft simply cannot be as carte blanche as is often assumed.  People install software, uninstall software, upgrade hardware, add new hardware, restore back to an earlier date for problem resolution, etc.

Windows Update must deal with the individual system on a “current-as-is” basis.  The status of prerequisite updates must be ascertained, etc.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

      well woody

with the way 1903 is being released to manufacturers first before the public, let’s see if Microsoft will make PC manufacturers their new “guinea pigs” and let them take the “cannon fodder”, hee hee 🙂

In addition to what changes, if any that are made to Win 10 Pro Group Policy settings, keep an eye on the wushowhide utility, and whether we can still select among multiple feature updates (1809 or 1903) as laid out by zero2dash back in August 2018
