WOT marked askwoody link in the last “Group Policy: What is it affecting?” newsletter as unsafe due to being sent by unsafe sendgrid.net mail server.

The safety of sendgrid.com is right in the middle of the range, so it would seem that (by whatever metric the software uses to establish that) it would be uncertain, not yet warranting the unsafe label, if not for another factor.  The link text says it’s pointing to askwoody.com, but the actual link target points to sendgrid.net, and that’s a red flag also.  Links that claim to be going to one site but that actually go to another are a common feature of phishing emails.

Since the askwoody.com link will take you to the post in question if it were cut and pasted into the browser, I would agree that it would be better to just have that be the link target and not have sendgrid.net referenced at all in the email.  Even if it is doing the work behind the scene, there’s no reason for it to be visible to the user, at least that I can see.

SendGrid links always get flagged as suspicious/unsafe/malicious, which I believe is down to the tracking. Anything sent out with MailChimp integration is affected also – and it’s quite prevalent.

To prevent this, cut and paste the visible link to whatever site, without the tracking URL that SendGrid adds.

Your screenshot seems to be a webmail view of a notification email from the forum, is it?
That’s not quite the same as saying woody’s is unsafe.

I can’t see any sendgrid links in the actual newsletter.

      cheers, Paul

Look again at the image, it’s Sendlink that’s been flagged!

      You’re all right.

When you subscribe to a Topic – as you, Alex, have subscribed to the topic “group policy whats it affecting“, you asked to be notified by email when there’s a new post on the Topic.

When there’s a new post, AskWoody software puts together an email that contains the new post and emails it to you, using sendgrid. If we didn’t use sendgrid, the volume of mail we generate from Topic subscriptions would overwhelm any “normal” email provider.

In this case, the UK-based WOT security program has identified sendgrid as being a purveyor of unsafe mails.

We’ve had very few problems with sendgrid – it’s been a real godsend. But I don’t doubt for a minute that bad actors use it, too. So we’re getting tarred by a very broad brush.

Have you considered setting up Link Branding under Sendgrid’s Sender Authentication Settings? You could instead set it up to use a subdomain of askwoody.com for links and that would get rid of the Sendgrid generated domain.
