        Hello!

I’ve asked this question in various ways several times, and am still searching for an answer. For some reason, my laptop (Win 10 V 20H2) continues to take days to drop updates that I have hidden in wushowhide. Successfully hidden updates still appear on the WU list and even though it checks, it won’t drop off the hidden ones.

This month I hid the June update KB5003637 as soon as it was announced, and it successfully stays on the wushowhide’s  hidden list and doesn’t appear in the WU queue.

At least a week ago now – or more – that KB4023057 again reappeared in WU and I immediately hid it using wushowhide. It IS on the wushowhide hidden list, but it still shows in WU even after all these days. WU has checked for updates several times and that KB does not drop off – it checked this morning and that KB is still there.

So – my first question – is it really hidden, or will it install when I do finally install the June updates. I’ll need to unhide KB5003637 at some point – and I’m sure it will take several days to actually show up on the WU list so that it can be installed.

Also – if KB4023057 does install even though hidden – can I uninstall it?

Any thoughts on why those hidden updates still show up in WU many days after they have been hidden? And how can I make WU check and drop the ones that ARE hidden?

As an aside – I have looked into WuMgr, but can’t seem to get it to download the latest version – and not sure if that will help me figure this out anyway.

        Thanks!

To get rid of KB4023057 from the WU queue, simply follow the instructions in AKB2000013. That has always worked for me when an update has snuck into the queue that shows up in WU for download and installation.

Be sure to go through the steps in you head first before attempting them on your laptop. Or, better yet, print them out to have on hand, because a reboot is required.

You may also wish to very carefully compare ALL of the WU-related settings you have set on the laptop with the recommendations in AKB2000016 for your laptop’s version/edition of Windows 10 just to make sure one small setting wasn’t overlooked. My guess is that’s why the laptop is getting offered KB4023057 after being hidden when your other machines aren’t.

My computers get KB4023057 offered when MS changes the makeup of the update, which happens every three or four months, but that’s when everyone will get it offered. The update’s title will change from something such as “2021-03 Update for Windows 10 Version (insert your current version here) x64(or x86)-based Systems (KB4023057)” to “2021-05 Update for …”, and that itself will make it show back up on the list within WU for download and installation. Yes, even such minor things such as a name change which implies a change to the update itself will make it appear even if you’ve hidden it, because it’s considered a new version compared to the one you have previously hidden.

Right – I did follow all of those steps (always do when hiding updates) and that KB is now in the wushowhide hidden list – has been there for more than a week – and it still is also showing on the WU list,  too.

I have periodically hidden it when it resurfaces on the WU list – as it did this time. This is a new instance of it reappearing and then being hidden, and not dropping off of the WU list in more than a week.

It isn’t in the Hide Updates list so that I could try to repeat the steps.

I will check AKB2000016 but I’m pretty sure those are all right.

          Thanks!

Got today KB4023057 for 21H1 (previous was on 03-2021 for 20H2) and Installed.
        No problems or changed settings.

I have installed all KB4023057 in the last years with no ill effects.

Thanks! So I guess if I need to install the June update at some point with KB4023057 still on both the wushowhide hidden list and on the WU download list, I can always uninstall it if need be?

Yes, you can uninstall it from its listing in Control Panel>Programs and Features. Then click on the link on the left side of the window that says “View installed updates”. KB4023057 won’t be listed as such, instead it will be listed as some sort of improvement update for Windows with an install date matching the date KB4023057 was installed. One possible title you might see in “View installed updates” is “Microsoft Update Health Tools”. If you see that, that’s the name for KB4023057, and you should feel free to uninstall it if you choose to do so.

Thanks! I guess I won’t worry about it and if it does download, I’ll do as you say and uninstall it. Just seems that the WU queue and the wushowhide hidden list take ages – if ever – to actually match.

        Thanks again!

Can anyone tell me the link to where I can download a current version of WuMgr? I can only find one for v 0.9.

        Thanks!

It’s on GitHub. Link below, scroll down the page, find “WuMgr_v1.1b.zip”

MS keeps on issuing new versions of KB4023057 from time to time thru WU, so you either have to keep on using Wumgr or wushowhide.diagcab to hide the newly revised versions of it

Yes, that is what I did do when I saw it again last week. It came up again last week – and I hid it again last week using wushowhide – but it still is showing on the WU list as well as showing that it is hidden.

It isn’t one that I hid a while ago – it was newly hidden last week, but won’t drop off of the WU list. There isn’t another one showing up in wushowhide to be hidden – it IS hidden there, just not gone from the WU list.

I guess my question is why won’t the WU queue update to match the wushowhide queue and drop off hidden updates when it checks periodically instead of continuing to show that KB, even though it has been and is hidden in wushowhide.

I can only speculate that the WU queue didn’t clear as it should’ve when doing it’s periodic update check.

Are you sure you followed all steps as detailed in AKB2000013? It’s a fairly long thread so re-read and maybe try again.

Well, this morning it FINALLY cleared the WU queue and KB4023057 is no longer showing. I didn’t (couldn’t) do anything else to try to rehide it since as far as wushowhide was concerned it was hidden already.

I am pretty careful with the wushowhide steps and use a printed copy to be sure that I don’t miss one. And since the queue finally did clear – more than 12 days later – it must have been done correctly.

All of which also brings me to the conundrum of having to wait so long when I unhide the June KB when we get the green light – that will most likely take many days to show up – hopefully before the July updates are out. I seem to walk this path every month, and try as I might, I can’t find what setting to change so that WU effectively updates itself. It does check for updates every day or so – but the list doesn’t change very often – till many days have gone by.

Thanks for the help – guess we’ll see what happens next, but for now that version of KB4023057 is no longer on the WU list.

Using WUngr you don’t have to wait at all.
Unhide and download/install directly in WUngr.

It’s easy, hover over the buttons to see what they do.
The only thing you can do initially is Search (first button). This shows you what is available.

Don’t change any of the options, just use the buttons.

            cheers, Paul

What is listed on the WU screen now?

Does is show as ‘up to date’ ?

Is a pause period set and is ‘ metered connection’ set to On ?

Just out of curiosity, why don’t you set a pause period, deferring any updates until it expires or you resume them? That way no nasty surprises.

I don’t set a pause since I have settings in Group Policy for updates instead. I didn’t think I needed both. I have Group Policy set as indicated here. That way I can see the updates and hide them if needed – though this long wait in between hiding and dropping off the WU queue has been an issue.

If I choose Pause would that override the Group Policy settings?

You don’t need to use Pause in either Home or Pro. Not using Pause is the best option.
            Home: metered network connection.
            Pro: Group Policy

            cheers, Paul
